New revelations about Calciopoli: ‘After Juventus, followed by Inter’

An Italian broadcaster has released unknown wiretaps related to the Calciopoli scandal and attempts to favor Inter in arbitration.

The conclusion of two decades since the scandal Calciopoli is near, but Italian media revelations about a case that has never been fully resolved continue unabated.

Rai 3’s investigative program Report aired an episode on Monday devoted to the scandal and allegedly cover-up aspects such as the involvement of Inter, who were the big winners, winning the 2006 championship on paper and going unchallenged in the following years suspensions remained at Juventus, AC Milan and Lazio, among others.

The episode sent dialogues from the approximately 170,000 listeners that their protagonist Luciano Mozzi had given to the press via USB stick at the time.

Among others, the public prosecutor of Naples, Giadomenico Lepore, who was involved in the investigation of the wiretapping by the authorities, spoke on the show. He explained why the evidence examined by the court mainly concerned Juventus. It is recalled that when data about Inter was released it was too late as there was a statute of limitations.

“We started with Juventus because we had more evidence and then we went on with the other clubs. And almost all the other clubs were involved in that, let’s be honest. One day the wiretapping was published in Espresso magazine. Suddenly everyone was phones gone.” dead and we just stayed with Juventus. We had our suspicions about who leaked the data, but never any real evidence, so we didn’t know. If we could continue the investigation, it would be Inter’s turn after Juventus.”

One of the eavesdropping activities involving the Nerazzurri involved then-honorary president and club legend Giacchino Facetti with referee Paolo Bergamo from 1999-2005, while Paolo Bertini officiated the Nerazzurri’s Coppa Italia semi-finals. “Only four wins with him? Let’s make it five. He’s a smart kid, he knows how to get started.” Bergamo said Facchetti, who has been suspected of having the same conversations with Mozzi for years but never made it to court.

The wiretapping also concerns then-President of the Italian Football Federation, Franco Carraro, who asked Bergamo for Inter’s favor ahead of a Derby d’Italia against Juventus. “If there is any doubt, do not favor Juventus. You see, if Pierluigi Collina were the referee there would be no problem because if he makes a mistake nobody will say anything. Pasquale Rodomodi does not have a good reputation.” . God, if Rodomodi makes a mistake against Inter, we’re a madhouse. The two teams are 15 points apart. When in doubt, listen to me, think of the team that is far behind.” Carraro is heard saying.

What’s more, the then-boss of Italian football also asked a favor for Lazio after a series of arbitration decisions. “On Sunday they play Milan. Objectively it’s a difficult game and we have to help them.” he said to Carraro. In a call to another person, he explained his reasoning: “Lazio comes from a series of injustices. They played in Rome and didn’t get a clear penalty. I said to Bergamo please be careful.”

On Tuesday, Moratti was asked to comment on the show’s content, but he kept his distance: “Trying to put Inter in the same position as Juventus is very annoying. It wasn’t like that. We behaved well, it’s normal and we are blamed by those who didn’t behave well, it’s very aggravating.”
