Udinese 1-1 Napoli: Osimen crowns them Italian champions after 33 years
Napoli won the Italian league for the first time in 33 years thanks to a 1-1 draw at Udinese, with Victor Ocimen again being the Partenopei’s top scorer and sparking a night-long party.
The 33-year wait is over. Napoli are Italian champions again, for the third time in their history and for the first time without Diego Maradona dancing on the pitch. The 1-1 in Friuli on the other hand Udinese it was enough for the “Partenopei” who gave them a gap to 2nd place, which earned them the Scudetto of matchday 33 of Serie A.
The postponement of the coronation last Sunday did not deter Napoli fans. About 10,000 of them made their way to the north of Italy, about 60,000 of them filled the “Diego Armando Maradona” where the game was broadcast on big screens.
Luciano Spalletti’s men gave way under the circumstances in the 1st half after leaving Victor Osimen helpless in search of the goal. A Nigerian chance became easy prey for the hosts’ defence, who found a goal in Sandi Lovric and ‘frozen’ Napoli.
In the 2nd half, the guests came in with a completely different mentality and were rehabilitated. They eliminated Udinese in their own area and in the 52nd minute Oshimen scored his 22nd goal in 27 league games, breaking the African league record set by Samuel Eto’o. In fact, he has matched Georges Weah’s 46 total career goals in the category and it’s possible he could soon lift that ‘dark continent’ record in Serie A as well.
The game seemed to end prematurely after equalizing. Udinese never got in front of the center and the only thing that could have happened was the reversal and the victory of the ‘Partenopei’. It wasn’t long before they were crowned Italian champions for the first time since 1990 with a 1-1 draw, sparking an all-night party 850km away.
