Bigon: “My biggest regret is that Diego is not here to celebrate this triumph”
Alberto Bigon, former coach of Olympiacos and Napoli in the 1990 championship, praised Luciano Spalletti’s team for winning the Scudetto and specifically mentioned the gap left by Maradona.
For a full 33 years, Alberto Bigon was remembered among others as the last manager to have taken Napoli to the top of Italy, but as of Thursday evening (4/5) that is no longer the case as Luciano takes over the baton and helped Spalletti, who managed it them to win the third Scudetto in their history.
This event caused great euphoria in 75-year-old Bigon, of which the former Olympiakos manager (he succeeded Dusan Bajevic shortly after the start of the 1999/2000 season and was replaced by Yiannis Mantzourakis before the end of that season) is proud of about this spoke the performance of the Neapolitans through his interview.
“Spalletti and the Napoli he built made a feat that will be remembered for a long time. I see similarities between the two teams, for example the spirit and sacrifice for the common good.
Many thought we couldn’t compete with Milan, just as many didn’t have confidence in Napoli last summer who lost Insigne, Mertens and Koulibaly. But it has to be said that management did a great job replacing them with Kvaratthelia and Kim.”he emphasized in an interview with the “Gazzetta dello Sport” and added:
“It’s nice that the Napoli fans are celebrating after such a long time. Both she and the club deserve it. I’m also happy that we won all but one of our home games.
My biggest regret is that Diego can’t be here to celebrate his beloved Napoli’s triumph and that he wasn’t in Doha to celebrate Argentina’s victory at the World Cup.
I cherish in my heart the memories that bind me to Maradona and I prefer not to speak about them.”
