Allegri ends Juventus’ 35-year losing streak but remains on the bench
Juventus suffered an upset at home against Sevilla and were eliminated from the Europa League final. This is the second straight year without a trophy and Massimiliano Allegri’s name sits next to a negative record.
Massimiliano Allegri shone in his first season at Juventus from 2014 to 2019 during which time he ‘dissolved the competition’, winning five leagues, four cups, two Super Cups and also taking part in two Champions League finals.
But as successful as he was in his debut appearance at the Bianconeri bench, the length of his second spell is problematic as the veteran coach returns in 2021 to put things back together but has so far failed to find the right path.
The result is that ‘Juve’ has been outside the Italian top flight for three years (Inter won the title in 2021, Milan last year and Napoli this year), while being linked with Sevilla’s elimination from the Europa League semi-finals has left his name with one negative record.
What about the lack of trophies from summer 21 to now? The last Juventus manager to go two consecutive (complete) seasons without a trophy, from 1986 to 1988, was Rico Marchesi.
Taking into account reports from Italian media that Allegri will remain on the Bianconeri’s bench for the new season as well, the 55-year-old coach will make history as he was the last to keep his place on the ” Vecchia Signora” took over after two barren years Virginio Rosetta (1935-36, 1936-37, he also stayed in 1937-38 where he won the Coppa Italia).
