Sandro Tonali is one breath away from making history with his €70m move to Newcastle. Repubblica reveals some background on his special connection to AC Milan.

Newcastle have made Milan an irresistible offer for Sandro Tonali and with less than 24 hours the big deal is just a step away from being finalised, making the 23-year-old midfielder the most expensive sale in Rossoneri history and the Rossoneri’s most expensive transfer of any kind Italian footballer in history.

Nonetheless, Tonali’s bond with Milan is strong (he’s been a fan since childhood, which is why he drew Milan ahead of Inter when they were both besieging him years ago) and according to a report by Repubblica in the online edition, that’s a fact attesting to it.

This has to do with the player’s emotional state. The player found out about Newcastle’s offer while he was with Italy Under-21 national team and burst into tears upon learning of Milan’s intention to sack him.

As reported by the media, he himself wanted to stay at Milan much longer to become their figurehead and follow the urgings of the legendary Paolo Maldini, but Newcastle made an offer Milan found difficult to refuse.

It is noted that in addition to the emotional bond with Milan, Tonali will also benefit enormously from this deal as he can reach up to €10m a year with bonuses from the €2.5m he receives annually.
