Milan: CAS Leao has to pay 16.5 million for Sporting.
Sporting were exonerated before the CAS in the Rafael Leao case and the Portuguese striker was abruptly landed from the Scudetto celebrations at Milan after being asked to pay 16,500,000 euros to his former team.
THAT Rafael Leao celebrated the Serie A victory on Sunday, but lost the legal battle on Tuesday Athletic and has to pay 16,500,000 euros to his former team. The Milan international lost in the CAS, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, with the Supreme Court of Arbitration agreeing with the decision of UEFA’s competent courts.
The 22-year-old striker was on trial at the “Löwen” over his departure to Lille in the summer of 2018 after fans invaded and players were held in custody at the training centre.
Along with eight of his team-mates, they unilaterally terminated their contracts and ended up in other teams (including Daniel Pontense at Olympiakos), but the Lisbon team threatened a court case and found common ground with most of the teams whose players landed.
This was not the case at Lille and the teams were taken to court where Sporting was acquitted and both the French team and the player must compensate the Portuguese. The international forward approached the CAS, who however justified Sporting and withheld the sum of €16,500,000 Leao had to pay, of which 20% of his annual contract will now be withheld.
