Atalanta: Ilicic is fighting depression again

Josip Ilicic has been absent from Atalanta’s recent games due to fresh mental health issues and now the Italian club are even open to selling the Slovenian in January.

THAT Josip Ilicic was absent from Atalanta’s games against Venice and Inter despite not being injured or penalized. The Slovenian striker was absent due to health reasons, but of a different type, according to Repubblica.

Depression is a demon that has plagued the 33-year-old footballer in recent years. He was absent from Atalanta’s signings for months in 2019 but has been available for Gian Piero Gasperini since last season.

His age and the pluralism in attacking positions of Olympiacos’ opponents in the Europa League have deprived him of the basic kit of the past few years, but he remains a very important cog in the team’s machine and that’s why this relapse worries his people.

Atalanta’s first thought is to support the player again and keep him out of the limelight like in the old days. But the Italian newspaper’s report says she’s even ready to give it to him now.

His price isn’t specified but Repubblica say the Italian club is also listening to proposals for the current transfer window. The currently most likely scenario is that Ilicic will stay until the end of the season, although his contract, which expires in summer 2023, will not be terminated.
