Marinakis: “Criticism is good, but exaggeration is harmful, we will turn it around and be winners”
Vangelis Marinakis introduced Olympiakos’ new manager Mitchell and spoke about the Spaniard’s second term, the start of the team and the future.
THE Vangelis Marinakis introduced the new coach of Olympiacos, mitchellat an event at the PAE offices in Alexandra Square.
The Greek champions’ main shareholder spoke about the team’s start this season and how the Spanish manager returns to improve the situation.
“We all know Mitchell from his days as a coach at Olympiacos, but we also know him as a footballer. With Mitchell we have lived very beautiful moments, unique European evenings, with an Olympiacos playing very good football and keeping an eye on its greatest teams, like the Eye of Europe, champions of Spain, Italy, even Manchester United. We looked them in the eye, we were all happy with what he achieved, the psychology of the players, being the right person to play against these teams and win them. he said initially.
“He knows us well because many people have been with us for a long time. We had a good partnership and when we ended our partnership we remained friends and each wanted the other’s good. We had contacts. So there is no such thing as a settling-in period. It takes a lot of work and focus to perform well on the pitch.”
For overtime goals in Europe
“Our fans read different things and think that we are talking about a bad Olympiacos, about an Olympiacos that, as we read, hasn’t done well in Europe and hasn’t done well in Greece so far. This bad Olympiacos, with players, the we didn’t perform what should have been a draw or we conceded goals that changed the result five times in added time in europe is that good no it’s not good it’s a coincidence and we should be more careful. We could have done a different result with the same performance and now let’s talk about the Champions League”.
For Olympiacos in Greece
“Let’s go to the three games in Greece where we lost seven points. According to the numbers – and the numbers don’t lie – and according to the statistics, Olympiakos’ performance against Asteras was one of the best. We had classic chances, we. ” should have won, the same goes for Volos, where we had chances that didn’t go to waste, and even for Aris, where we lost three points, the game would not have gone the other way without a childish mistake by our goalkeeper and left-back.”
For the criticism Olympiacos received
“Criticism is good, we accept it and criticism is meant to correct mistakes, but overdoing it hurts. This Olympiakos accidentally lost seven points and as far as Europe is concerned, the results could very well be different if we didn’t concede goals in the second half would have.” “In terms of those extravagances, we have very tall players who need to work hard and see their performance on the field. I’m optimistic that will change, more optimistic now that we have a man I trust. I’m getting better see days.” “.
“There is a certain newspaper that considers them to be the Olympiacos newspaper. Their property has earned millions from Olympiacos and to this day has not spent an orange on any part of the amateur. So we see on the front pages and in the media where The Owner writes that they are on a mission with reports that have no substance with the sole purpose of causing harm. I leave it to the judgment of the Olympic Games whether or not to read and believe this paper. For another website that is owned by the Russian and written by his children, he is in charge, we don’t need to say much, we’re talking about constant mud here, which shouldn’t bother us, we’re winning records at the end and are getting focused again and with hard work, we will turn it around.”
For Jose Anigo
“I would also like to introduce Jose Angikos who has been with us for four years, the football manager, a man with tremendous experience, tremendous success, players who have worked with him. He will be close to us, close to Mitchell and.” with his experience and knowledge to help us. Karebe who was with us all the time, a man who gives every day and loves the club.
Another partner of Mitchell who started with us this year is Avraam Papadopoulos, who I have every confidence in, who loves the club and will be with us for many years to come. These are partners I have complete confidence in, who are in daily contact and who know the team. We have a strong team and we keep dreaming.”
About how he convinced Hames and Marcelo to come to Olympiacos
“For us, with the experience we have and the contacts we have in European football, I think it helps us to negotiate and convince some big players to come to Greece and play for Olympiakos .
I think that in these 12 years a lot has happened and a lot has happened, not only with our successes in Greece but also in Europe. Therefore many nights of ours or many days of ours can make up a lifetime for all or ten lifetimes.
We continue to build on those contacts and what has helped quite a bit is our commitment to Nottingham Forest. It’s something that helps Olympiakos, it helps Greek football too and now that it’s in the Premier League it helps even more. Everyone must understand that he always works for Olympiakos.
Being able to talk to different people across Europe about a Premier League team certainly makes your work in Greece easier too.
As I jokingly said to Mitchell when he came on, we’ve become a little colony of Real Madrid, starting with Mitchell, Carebe, Marcelo, James, let’s see what else we get.”

Despodov became an integral part of a well-coordinated machine: the two great performances against Kifissia
Kirill Despodov put in his best performance with the PAOK jersey in the 2023 final and showed that he has fully integrated into Razvan Lucescu’s group. The Bulgarian midfielder’s outstanding performances against Kifissia.
PAOK ideally completed its commitments before the end of 2023, when it passed Kaisariani with full football and played the newly enlightened Kifissia.
Lucescu’s men produced their most productive performance in this year’s Stoiximan Super League, finishing second in threat as their 15 final appearances were valuable 2.29 xGoals. The previous event happened three days ago in Tripoli when they beat Asteras 4-1. Thomas Murg’s star shone in this game. In Caesariani, Kirill Despodov was MVP.
The Bulgarian midfielder was one of six goalscorers for the Black and Whites and provided three assists, marking his most successful appearance for the Black and Whites. Tyson and Zivkovic were absent from these two games (Asteras and Kifisia), but their absence was never felt. And in this (especially at Kifissia) Despodov played an important role.
Despodov’s two great performances against Kifissia
Kirill Despodov was deployed on the right attacking wing, the position where Lucescu uses him most often, and the Bulgarian once again fulfilled his role. In fact, he was the player higher up the field (77) than Brandon Thomas (71) who turned further back on the field several times, as we can see in the Opta Stats/Perform graph.
Lucescu held him the entire game and Despontov finished the game with 58 actions with the ball. In fact, ten of them were in the Anagnostopoulos area. It was the highest performance by a Dikefalo player in the league, behind Tomas’ 11 appearances against Lamia.
In one of these ten actions, Despodov scored with a beautiful shot from deep. Where it stood out from Kifissia was the creation part. Created four finals All three even provided assists for his teammates (for goals from Thomas, Murg and Ozdoev).
At the same time he had four successful dribbles a record performance by a PAOK player in 90 minutes. Because Despodov was high up the pitch, he didn’t have many passes, but he had a very good scoring rate 26/32 precise passes.
The Bulgarian started perfectly at PAOK, but gradually experienced a slight decline as his role in Dikefalos is different to the one he had in Ludogorets. But now he shows that he is fully integrated, which is clear from both his appearances and his statements.
The summer addition of Despontov and the return of Murg gave Lucescu the opportunity to comfortably and successfully navigate the league and Conference League by splitting time and opening up the rotation. These two footballers were able to adequately fill the gap left by Živković and Tyson, who were missing in the last few games.
