A football plan and two excesses for Giannikis to stay at AEK

AEK coach Argyris Giannikis has two big chances ahead of him. Either he will comply with the demands or he will retire from his work in the Union.

If there’s one thing AEK have avoided after three straight losses at the Olympiastadion, it’s the added introversion in the face of the most critical game of the season. Of the only game she has left to keep her dignity, as if she thinks she did it because she prevailed against the worst team in the league and after OFI, Panetolikos and Volos previously threw her on the canvas had, then admittedly she has forgotten which one it used to be.

Although in that particular game she needed her goalkeeper to stay inside, as if Apollon had preceded the huge opportunity that presented himself before Araούjo opened the gate, it’s highly likely that he had collapsed, I’ll take the victory keep and perish. Finally, what else can be said and who can be praised for becoming the most obvious? I only find it important the next day and in the plan that Argyris Giannikis will present against PAOK on Wednesday.

If it’s similar to the first half of this game, the show will end very quickly and won’t be forever. If he again finds a way to capitalize on the biggest opportunity he has to continue on the bench at AEK, perhaps we’ll have another discussion on the future of the team and his own in general on Thursday morning. The trainer has his back against the wall, but also finds the best perspective that can be offered to someone who seems to have “slowed down” in a certain professional home: he should achieve what no one before him has achieved in years. What could be more important than doing what nobody expects?

The “New Stadium Coach” is now in a pink cloud

AEK has a win against PAOK in the last 15 official games between them and it was scored in Toumba with coach Massimo Carrera in a match looking for the playoffs and in fact not having the weight that sets it apart in two days today . Breaking AEK with a very negative tradition that has been cemented against this team in recent years is the surest way for the coach to buy some time and some confidence. It won’t establish him on the bench but it will definitely give him life and space to try again.

If we’re going to be honest and identify with reality, Giannikis is no longer treated as the coach who will bring AEK to his new headquarters, to his newly built stadium, but as an official who, from day to day, from game to game is judged. Only through positive results, especially now when the demands are very high, as after the game with PAOK follows the game with Olympiakos against Georgios Karaiskakis, he gets time credited.

On Thursday morning or next Monday at the latest we will know whether Giannikis will remain on the ‘Union’ bench. History has shown that big words and loud announcements do not correspond to reality. The game was also won against Apollo because the quality prevailed and not some visible football plan. Against the next opponent, without the second, there will be no positive development. Clearly, we are now moving towards the two games that will tell us whether AEK will have the same manager a week from now, or whether they will be called to an abrupt change of sides.

Despodov became an integral part of a well-coordinated machine: the two great performances against Kifissia

Kirill Despodov put in his best performance with the PAOK jersey in the 2023 final and showed that he has fully integrated into Razvan Lucescu’s group. The Bulgarian midfielder’s outstanding performances against Kifissia.

PAOK ideally completed its commitments before the end of 2023, when it passed Kaisariani with full football and played the newly enlightened Kifissia.

Lucescu’s men produced their most productive performance in this year’s Stoiximan Super League, finishing second in threat as their 15 final appearances were valuable 2.29 xGoals. The previous event happened three days ago in Tripoli when they beat Asteras 4-1. Thomas Murg’s star shone in this game. In Caesariani, Kirill Despodov was MVP.

The Bulgarian midfielder was one of six goalscorers for the Black and Whites and provided three assists, marking his most successful appearance for the Black and Whites. Tyson and Zivkovic were absent from these two games (Asteras and Kifisia), but their absence was never felt. And in this (especially at Kifissia) Despodov played an important role.

Despodov’s two great performances against Kifissia

Kirill Despodov was deployed on the right attacking wing, the position where Lucescu uses him most often, and the Bulgarian once again fulfilled his role. In fact, he was the player higher up the field (77) than Brandon Thomas (71) who turned further back on the field several times, as we can see in the Opta Stats/Perform graph.

Despodov became an integral part of a well-tuned machine

Lucescu held him the entire game and Despontov finished the game with 58 actions with the ball. In fact, ten of them were in the Anagnostopoulos area. It was the highest performance by a Dikefalo player in the league, behind Tomas’ 11 appearances against Lamia.

In one of these ten actions, Despodov scored with a beautiful shot from deep. Where it stood out from Kifissia was the creation part. Created four finals All three even provided assists for his teammates (for goals from Thomas, Murg and Ozdoev).

Despodov became an integral part of a well-tuned machine

At the same time he had four successful dribbles a record performance by a PAOK player in 90 minutes. Because Despodov was high up the pitch, he didn’t have many passes, but he had a very good scoring rate 26/32 precise passes.

The Bulgarian started perfectly at PAOK, but gradually experienced a slight decline as his role in Dikefalos is different to the one he had in Ludogorets. But now he shows that he is fully integrated, which is clear from both his appearances and his statements.

The summer addition of Despontov and the return of Murg gave Lucescu the opportunity to comfortably and successfully navigate the league and Conference League by splitting time and opening up the rotation. These two footballers were able to adequately fill the gap left by Živković and Tyson, who were missing in the last few games.
