Olympiacos has the best goalkeeper in the league again this year

Others scored but Vatslik laid the foundation for Olympiacos’ 3-0 win in Nice. Themis Kaisaris uses Opta data to explain why the Czech is the best goalkeeper in the league.

Olympiakos also came through Nice, keeping the difference with PAOK at nine points. The champions struggled more than the last 3-0 shows, earning an individual quality win.

Quality moments in attack

The quality that gave Agibu Kamara the opportunity to open the scoring with an amazing shot from outside the box and score his third goal outside the “box”.

The quality of Massoura who changed Rodrεςguez when he left injured.

The 28-year-old went down and kept the ball nicely to win the penalty to make it 2-0, leading perfectly to the goal that made it 3-0 in the end.

Between the goals was a cross from Bouhalakis, who calmed the center and helped Olympiakos control the game better.

Vatslik laid the foundation with his rebounds

Previously, the foundations for Olympiakos’ victory were laid by the quality of Vatslik. The Czech was the one who kept the zero with his interventions for the rest to come to give the Red and Whites another win.

Vatslik said “no” in a four-on-four with Lenis in the 15th minute, brought down Dalsio’s powerful one-handed shot in the 33rd minute and “got the job” with a rebound with Mantzis in the 44th minute.

The final in the first half was 6:2 and 0:1, not only because of Agibu’s shot, but mainly thanks to Vatslik’s interventions.

For two years it was Sa, this year Vatslik

The Czech laid the groundwork and, in his own presence this season, bet more than ever on Olympiacos’ victory, certifying the Red-Whites as the best goalkeeper in the league this year.

“And this year” refers to Jose Sa, of course. The Portuguese was La Liga’s No. 1 goalkeeper for two seasons and is now shining in the Premier League.

Watslik took his place not only under the Olympiacos goalposts, but also in the position of leaders of the Super League Interwetten.

We can evaluate it using Opta/Stats Perform. Expected goals on target ranks how difficult or easy the endgames the goalkeepers are facing. Through them we can know how many goals an average goalkeeper would concede in finals at home.

The best goalkeeper so far

So we know which Super League goalkeepers ate less than the average goalkeeper and which more. The answers in the graphic below.

The performance of the goalkeepers in this year's Super League Interwetten

Vatslik, one. An average goalkeeper would eat up 12 goals in the final faced by the Czech and Vatslik 10, not counting penalties or own goals.

With two goals less than expected, Vatslik is the only goalkeeper in the league to have performed above average.

Incredible or not, everyone else conceded more goals than expected. Stankovic has scored another goal, Brinoli has four, while Paschalakis has conceded five more goals from an average goalkeeper and “flirts” with the six.

The form of goalkeepers is relatively unstable. One or two matches, 4-5 saves or bad moments are enough to change the dates and “raise and lower” the league leaders.

Whatever happens, Vatslik has shown he can be reliable for Olympiakos and in his form can be the one to concede fewer goals than average at a time when AEK, PAOK and Panathinaikos aren’t getting the same from the goalkeeper.

Despodov became an integral part of a well-coordinated machine: the two great performances against Kifissia

Kirill Despodov put in his best performance with the PAOK jersey in the 2023 final and showed that he has fully integrated into Razvan Lucescu’s group. The Bulgarian midfielder’s outstanding performances against Kifissia.

PAOK ideally completed its commitments before the end of 2023, when it passed Kaisariani with full football and played the newly enlightened Kifissia.

Lucescu’s men produced their most productive performance in this year’s Stoiximan Super League, finishing second in threat as their 15 final appearances were valuable 2.29 xGoals. The previous event happened three days ago in Tripoli when they beat Asteras 4-1. Thomas Murg’s star shone in this game. In Caesariani, Kirill Despodov was MVP.

The Bulgarian midfielder was one of six goalscorers for the Black and Whites and provided three assists, marking his most successful appearance for the Black and Whites. Tyson and Zivkovic were absent from these two games (Asteras and Kifisia), but their absence was never felt. And in this (especially at Kifissia) Despodov played an important role.

Despodov’s two great performances against Kifissia

Kirill Despodov was deployed on the right attacking wing, the position where Lucescu uses him most often, and the Bulgarian once again fulfilled his role. In fact, he was the player higher up the field (77) than Brandon Thomas (71) who turned further back on the field several times, as we can see in the Opta Stats/Perform graph.

Despodov became an integral part of a well-tuned machine

Lucescu held him the entire game and Despontov finished the game with 58 actions with the ball. In fact, ten of them were in the Anagnostopoulos area. It was the highest performance by a Dikefalo player in the league, behind Tomas’ 11 appearances against Lamia.

In one of these ten actions, Despodov scored with a beautiful shot from deep. Where it stood out from Kifissia was the creation part. Created four finals All three even provided assists for his teammates (for goals from Thomas, Murg and Ozdoev).

Despodov became an integral part of a well-tuned machine

At the same time he had four successful dribbles a record performance by a PAOK player in 90 minutes. Because Despodov was high up the pitch, he didn’t have many passes, but he had a very good scoring rate 26/32 precise passes.

The Bulgarian started perfectly at PAOK, but gradually experienced a slight decline as his role in Dikefalos is different to the one he had in Ludogorets. But now he shows that he is fully integrated, which is clear from both his appearances and his statements.

The summer addition of Despontov and the return of Murg gave Lucescu the opportunity to comfortably and successfully navigate the league and Conference League by splitting time and opening up the rotation. These two footballers were able to adequately fill the gap left by Živković and Tyson, who were missing in the last few games.
