Aris - AEK 0-2: Union "Storm" in Vikelidis with Simanski and Garcia

AEK took the lead in the first half thanks to added time. Gacinovic took a free-kick from the right and Szymanski headed the ball into the net at the far post without Cuesta deflecting the ball.

After Simanksi’s goal, Union missed two big chances to extend the lead. Pineda stole the ball in midfield and passed to Araujo, who fired the ball wide into the empty goal in the 30th minute.

Seven minutes later, it was Levi Garcia’s turn to make a threat. The Union forward dodged Cuesta but his place was weak and Mazikou managed to clear the ball before crossing the line.

In the second half, Union came into play strongly and found a goal in the first few minutes. The guests stole the ball in midfield. Araujo fed Garcia vertically, going behind the defense and sending the ball in with a nice finish.

AEK continued in the same pattern for the rest of the second 45 minutes and had a few chances to score but to no avail. It should be noted that the moment of the game was the message sent by the AEK players with the t-shirts for Alkis Kampanos, which earned Aris’ respect.

How the two teams lined up

Alan Pardew shuffled the deck, made axis changes, and knew the strength of the Union in this particular piece. The Yellows lined up in a 4-3-3 formation, with Nkulu making his first appearance as a starter, while Andre Gray and Mateo Garcia returned to the starting XI.

On the other hand, Matias Almeida lined up AEK with Ionicous recipe. The only change was Giorgos Athanasiadis, who sat under the goalposts in place of Chisan Stankovic, who missed the game due to a virus. The rest of the eleven was the same compared to the first game against Nikaiotes.

The Union went up after 18′ and found the goal

Ares came into play more powerfully, utilizing his world’s aura. The Yellows had some conditions to threaten Athanasiadis’s frames, but the Yellow-Black defense coped either way, either by cutting shots or by the intervention of AEK’s Greek goalkeeper after Mancini’s final. In the 18th minute Dabo sent the ball just wide with a nice individual energy and a strong shot.

Union turned up the heat after Dubbo’s finish and had the first good chance with Gacinovic in the 25th minute, but Cuesta responded brilliantly. A minute later, Rota sent the ball wide with a powerful shot.

Matias Almeida’s players found the goal they were looking for and moments later they had more chances to score more goals, but Araújo in the 30th minute and Garcia in the 37th minute missed great scoring chances.

AEK controlled the game until the first-half final, with Simanski’s good long-range shot going just wide in the 40th minute while Aris threatened little after Dabo’s final shot in the 18th minute.

In the second half he cleaned up and had phases for more goals

In the second half, AEK went strong into the second half and found the goal they were looking for in Levia Garcia in the 51st minute after an assist from Araujo.

After the goal, the pace of the game slowed down as both teams made pretty hard covers. AEK mainly threatened on the counterattack but continued the high pressure with Aris player not avoiding mistakes.

Almeida’s players came on after the 60th minute and made several threats, with Aris making several mistakes. Pineda had two last tries in good conditions that were cut off by the defenders, while Gacinovic sent a tight header in the 75th minute to Cuesta, who saved.

At the start of the 68th minute, Garcia scored a second after a spin from Pineda but the 24-year-old forward was unmasked. After 80 minutes, Aris tried to gain something from the game, but was unable to threaten Union with the 0-2 until the end, except for Camacho’s shot that just missed in the 86th minute.

Despodov became an integral part of a well-coordinated machine: the two great performances against Kifissia

Kirill Despodov put in his best performance with the PAOK jersey in the 2023 final and showed that he has fully integrated into Razvan Lucescu’s group. The Bulgarian midfielder’s outstanding performances against Kifissia.

PAOK ideally completed its commitments before the end of 2023, when it passed Kaisariani with full football and played the newly enlightened Kifissia.

Lucescu’s men produced their most productive performance in this year’s Stoiximan Super League, finishing second in threat as their 15 final appearances were valuable 2.29 xGoals. The previous event happened three days ago in Tripoli when they beat Asteras 4-1. Thomas Murg’s star shone in this game. In Caesariani, Kirill Despodov was MVP.

The Bulgarian midfielder was one of six goalscorers for the Black and Whites and provided three assists, marking his most successful appearance for the Black and Whites. Tyson and Zivkovic were absent from these two games (Asteras and Kifisia), but their absence was never felt. And in this (especially at Kifissia) Despodov played an important role.

Despodov’s two great performances against Kifissia

Kirill Despodov was deployed on the right attacking wing, the position where Lucescu uses him most often, and the Bulgarian once again fulfilled his role. In fact, he was the player higher up the field (77) than Brandon Thomas (71) who turned further back on the field several times, as we can see in the Opta Stats/Perform graph.

Despodov became an integral part of a well-tuned machine

Lucescu held him the entire game and Despontov finished the game with 58 actions with the ball. In fact, ten of them were in the Anagnostopoulos area. It was the highest performance by a Dikefalo player in the league, behind Tomas’ 11 appearances against Lamia.

In one of these ten actions, Despodov scored with a beautiful shot from deep. Where it stood out from Kifissia was the creation part. Created four finals All three even provided assists for his teammates (for goals from Thomas, Murg and Ozdoev).

Despodov became an integral part of a well-tuned machine

At the same time he had four successful dribbles a record performance by a PAOK player in 90 minutes. Because Despodov was high up the pitch, he didn’t have many passes, but he had a very good scoring rate 26/32 precise passes.

The Bulgarian started perfectly at PAOK, but gradually experienced a slight decline as his role in Dikefalos is different to the one he had in Ludogorets. But now he shows that he is fully integrated, which is clear from both his appearances and his statements.

The summer addition of Despontov and the return of Murg gave Lucescu the opportunity to comfortably and successfully navigate the league and Conference League by splitting time and opening up the rotation. These two footballers were able to adequately fill the gap left by Živković and Tyson, who were missing in the last few games.
