Ionian – Panaitolikos 1:1: The Battle of Nice without a winner
The Battle of Nice had goals, goalposts, chances and excitement all the way to the final but did not announce a winner, with Ionikos staying 1-1 with Panaitolikos in the game that opened the Super League’s Round 9 fixture list.
Ionian and Panaitolikos fought a tough duel in Nice as part of the 9th game of the Super League with a goal, a crossbar, several chances and strong emotions, with the final still not having a winner as both teams had their moments to taking the whole… cake but settling for 1-1.
A result that left a bittersweet aftertaste for both Dimitris Spanos and Yiannis Anastasiou. Ionikos performed well (15 finals) but fell from a third penalty in the second game in a row and remains unbeaten in the league (4 draws – 5 defeats), while Panaitolikos, on the other hand, had the most classic celebrations. The three-pointer remained the five consecutive games in all competitions without a win.
The first quarter of the game was all for Ionikos, the hosts coming into the game with momentum and pacing to score the coveted goal very quickly. This happened in the 6th minute after an intelligent vertical pass from Aosman when Mantzi came out from behind the Panaitolikos defense and beat Stergiakis with a penalty inside the box (1-0).
Aside from scoring, the Nikaiten also threatened Sakits in the 9th minute, Panaitolikos then accelerated, took the ball and rightly equalized. Kolovos had a huge chance in the 16th minute which he didn’t convert, but Mygas thwarted a penalty (hand in wide area) and missed Karelis’ chance to put the ball in and make it 1-1 at the end of the half hour .
In the 34th minute, Aosman found himself in an advantageous position to put his team ahead again, but the header from high in the area went wide, allowing the two teams to score in the dressing room at the break at 1: 1, which was fair given the overall picture.
At the beginning of the second half, the Ionian players fought with more energy but didn’t find a classic chance in their good time, with Panaitolikos for their part having an amazing five minutes with three big chances.
In the 59th minute, Duarte rattled the bar with an unimaginable shot from outside the box, and three minutes later Houtesiotis made a difficult turn of a superb spin from Karelis inside the box to end Agrinio’s team’s trilogy of good periods with a Morsey shot to be completed at 64′, who sent the ball to the outside of the net.
The home team’s response came in the 79th minute, when the ball was put down Seba’s run after Lovera and Cigrinski worked together, but his penalty from an advantageous position sent the ball wide, with Panaitolikos on his side’s last great chance had the 90 + 2′, with his shot from the left into the box, sending the ball wide of the right post.
