Matthias Valbouena, like good old red (French) wine
Olympiakos went through Panthessalikos with Mathieu Valbouena providing the solution and the Reds and Whites showing they are capable of taking valuable players off the bench. writes Dimitris Christofidellis.
When Olympiacos are under pressure, Mathieu Valbouena is there to bring the solution. In fact, they constantly ensure that they are “present” in the difficult matches of the Piraeus team when Valbouena, El Arabi, Ticinio, Masouras, Embila and when Vatslik, Manolas and Papastathopoulos. They all have at least four things in common: quality, experience, determination and efficiency.
It is this quality that makes the difference in the Greek championship for Olympiacos and Piraeus sits at +11 from PAOK. Pedro Martins, for example, had the opportunity to bring players worth Valbouena, Embila and Tessin off the bench in Volos. How many teams and how many coaches in the Super League Interwetten have this luxury? So it’s only logical that Magnesia’s side were put under pressure in the last ten minutes of the game and finally relented.
Valbouena showed he wants a path and not trouble
Someone will say that the Piraeus Red-Whites could have made it easier if Agibu Kamara scored on 27′ and the ball hadn’t hit the left post of Kleiman. Because in that case, Costas Bratsos would be forced to differentiate his plan. With the “if” but neither history is written, nor does anything change.
Valbouena proved once again that he wants a path and not an effort. What if he is 38 years old? What if he comes off the bench with just 25 minutes to change the course of play? The Frenchman’s quality, experience and stamina are such that he can still make a difference for Olympiakos in the Greek championship.
Mathieu moved well in the field (81st) to discover himself and receive the Ticino long pass. He made it one to two with El Arabi and sent the ball into Kleiman’s right corner with a powerful right shot. Fast, easy, convincing, effective. No unnecessary actions, no concerns, no dribbling and ball pain.
The Frenchman is a man of substance and, incidentally, it was he who gave Olympiacos another win against Volos in the first half, with a foul in the 90th minute. At the end of the evening, these are the points that have been pocketed and the Piraeus side are getting closer to their goal week after week.
Watch out for the rematch with Atalanta
The Red-Whites remain unbeaten in the Super League Interwetten, kept a safe distance from their rivals at the top, are marching at full speed towards their 3rd consecutive title and 47th in their history and are now turning their attention back to the decisive rematch against Atalanta on Thursday (24/2, 19:45) in Karaiskaki.
Olympiacos are arithmetically first in the regular season with three games to go and will go into the play-offs of the tournament with a different face. Until then, however, he still has to collect nine points against Asteras Tripolis (in the postponed game in Faliro), OFI (in G. Karaiskakis) and Aris (in Kl. Vikelidis).
However, the three points in Volos was much more than a win for Olympiacos. We must not forget that the red-white came from the defeat in Bergamo and the way it came (from two static phases), from the energy expended and from the trip to Italy, while internally they had to do two twenty-four hours and a second trip to Magnesia. The Piraeus side have also drawn three of their last four away league games and were desperate to win.
Embilas’ contribution is crucial
Thus, as expected, Martins has changed half of the line-up for the game against Atalanta. He also diversified the system, opting for 4-2-3-1 instead of 3-4-3 in Bergamo. Ba, M. Kamara, Bouhalakis, Carvalio and El Arabi took the places of Manolas, Papastathopoulos, Embila, Oniekourou and Tikinio. In the end, however, it took the support of Valbouena, Embila and Ticinio for Olympiacos to claim victory.
Embila’s presence was crucial in the last half hour of the game because he did a lot to organize the game and the Red-Whites became more aggressive and threatening. And especially after the formation change to 4-4-2 in the final quarter of the game, as the constant movements of Tessiner and El Arabi going aside created empty spaces that were exploited by the Piraeus eleven.
Now the Olympiacos footballers have three 24 hours to properly prepare in game and mentally for the second leg with Atalanta, where their progress in the Europa League will be judged. The degree of difficulty is high and a lot is not only judged by the image of the Bergamaski, but above all by the performance of the red and white team.

Despodov became an integral part of a well-coordinated machine: the two great performances against Kifissia
Kirill Despodov put in his best performance with the PAOK jersey in the 2023 final and showed that he has fully integrated into Razvan Lucescu’s group. The Bulgarian midfielder’s outstanding performances against Kifissia.
PAOK ideally completed its commitments before the end of 2023, when it passed Kaisariani with full football and played the newly enlightened Kifissia.
Lucescu’s men produced their most productive performance in this year’s Stoiximan Super League, finishing second in threat as their 15 final appearances were valuable 2.29 xGoals. The previous event happened three days ago in Tripoli when they beat Asteras 4-1. Thomas Murg’s star shone in this game. In Caesariani, Kirill Despodov was MVP.
The Bulgarian midfielder was one of six goalscorers for the Black and Whites and provided three assists, marking his most successful appearance for the Black and Whites. Tyson and Zivkovic were absent from these two games (Asteras and Kifisia), but their absence was never felt. And in this (especially at Kifissia) Despodov played an important role.
Despodov’s two great performances against Kifissia
Kirill Despodov was deployed on the right attacking wing, the position where Lucescu uses him most often, and the Bulgarian once again fulfilled his role. In fact, he was the player higher up the field (77) than Brandon Thomas (71) who turned further back on the field several times, as we can see in the Opta Stats/Perform graph.
Lucescu held him the entire game and Despontov finished the game with 58 actions with the ball. In fact, ten of them were in the Anagnostopoulos area. It was the highest performance by a Dikefalo player in the league, behind Tomas’ 11 appearances against Lamia.
In one of these ten actions, Despodov scored with a beautiful shot from deep. Where it stood out from Kifissia was the creation part. Created four finals All three even provided assists for his teammates (for goals from Thomas, Murg and Ozdoev).
At the same time he had four successful dribbles a record performance by a PAOK player in 90 minutes. Because Despodov was high up the pitch, he didn’t have many passes, but he had a very good scoring rate 26/32 precise passes.
The Bulgarian started perfectly at PAOK, but gradually experienced a slight decline as his role in Dikefalos is different to the one he had in Ludogorets. But now he shows that he is fully integrated, which is clear from both his appearances and his statements.
The summer addition of Despontov and the return of Murg gave Lucescu the opportunity to comfortably and successfully navigate the league and Conference League by splitting time and opening up the rotation. These two footballers were able to adequately fill the gap left by Živković and Tyson, who were missing in the last few games.
