The charged Alexandropoulos now brings 4-2-3-1 to Panathinaikos

The truth about the numbers and ‘doesn’t play or doesn’t play a bit’ at Alexandropoulos is the development process of the 20-year-old midfielder, who has to go through certain steps and the 4-2-3-1 that he seems to ‘button’ better. Sportish analyses.

The (Intra-Panathinaikos) talk was on the table for weeks and became much more intense after the very good performance of Sotiris Alexandropoulos in the two-day match between Panathinaikos and AEK in Leoforos and the emphatic 3-0 of the “Clover”.

The 20-year-old midfielder won the penalty in the 15th minute that changed the balance of the game, had a crucial presence in midfield and all his numbers in the game were well above his average. So the . . . effortless question on the lips of many is logical: “Could it be that Alexandropoulos isn’t in the starting XI?“However, there are two sides to every medal and in all Ivan Jovanovic’s decisions there is always a specific justification, but also an explanation.

“Alexandros” played in 24 of Panathinaikos’ 30 matches in Super League Interwetten and Cup this year, ie in 80% of the team’s matches. Of these, he was in 15 games (in 62.5% of his own appearances and in 50% of team games) with a total time of 1,433 minutes (almost 60 minutes average) in the starting XI, scoring 1 goal and 3 assists.

First of all, Alexandropoulos had only played 4 minutes against Apollon Smyrnis in Panathinaikos’ last game and before the game against AEK, as he came from a muscle injury in his calf which he sustained in the game against PAOK on February 6th.

In the second analysis, his presence in the green team did not fall below his average, even when after the first round game with PAOK on the avenue, Jovanovic decided to change the system and turned it 4-4-1-1 (with Carlitos free behind Ioannidis or Makenda) in 4-3-3.

The trio of Ruben, Mauricio and Vigiafanies was certainly the Serbian coach’s first choice. And the reason was concrete and clear: with the way Panathinaikos played back then and Jovanovic’s intention for the greens to have possession and traffic control, he felt the above trio were better at securing those two elements.

Alexandropoulos has amazing vertical movement with the ball, he can create imbalances in opposing defenses, but he’s lagging (for now) in ball possession, his last selections and combined play.

Jovanovic wants it best

Of course, this doesn’t mean that Alexandropoulos’ competitive features aren’t valuable and hard to find. What the Serbian coach and his team have been trying to do since day one is to develop his game and mindset in a way that will allow him to stabilize his performance and his position in the starting XI, in a process where he wants to improve on his weaknesses and everywhere be much more productive.

Nobody wishes more than Jovanovic himself for the “little one” to come out and take on an even bigger role and responsibility. He knows very well that he has “gold” on his hands, but his development process should be specific and he has to come through working and improving his weaknesses.

And of course he should start absorbing a lot more of the directions and orders that come from the bench, either in daily practice or through the games.

In 4-2-3-1 it “fixes” better

The latter makes “Alexandros” much more intense lately. And that’s the right way. In fact, from the moment the game started with AEK and the forced (new) change of the system to 4-2-3-1 – due to the absence of Vigiafanies and Mauricio – it became apparent that the young midfielder was stuck in this logic.

The side with two central midfielders – Ruben and Alexandropoulos – who complemented each other in character and a solid midfielder in front of them (Gacinovic or Vijafanies if he returns) worked well to very well and added another option to the Serbian coach’s game plan.

It is not easy for a team that was “built up” from … zero last summer to enter a system change process within a few months. Everything is always a product of “fermentation” and work in everyday life. To get to the… second floor, he must have built a basement, a ground floor and the first. And that takes…

It can serve all formations

Now Panathinaikos is much better prepared to take other precautions in his daily life. And the 4-2-3-1, in which Alexandropoulos is in the “role” together with Ruben, Mauricio or “Villa”, will “enter” the game plan of the cloverleaf much more actively.

Because what follows is a new… marathon of back-to-back races, every three and four days in the playoffs and the Greek Cup, and different designs and all available midfielders are needed. Now Panathinaikos – with ‘Alexandros’ on the rise… full of psychology after the match with AEK, determined to claim his place in the starting XI even more – seems much more willing to play all formations (except for the ‘Rhombus’, which ever was not worked on because it “makes useless” the extremists, who always have the quartet as a “base” in defense.

Despodov became an integral part of a well-coordinated machine: the two great performances against Kifissia

Kirill Despodov put in his best performance with the PAOK jersey in the 2023 final and showed that he has fully integrated into Razvan Lucescu’s group. The Bulgarian midfielder’s outstanding performances against Kifissia.

PAOK ideally completed its commitments before the end of 2023, when it passed Kaisariani with full football and played the newly enlightened Kifissia.

Lucescu’s men produced their most productive performance in this year’s Stoiximan Super League, finishing second in threat as their 15 final appearances were valuable 2.29 xGoals. The previous event happened three days ago in Tripoli when they beat Asteras 4-1. Thomas Murg’s star shone in this game. In Caesariani, Kirill Despodov was MVP.

The Bulgarian midfielder was one of six goalscorers for the Black and Whites and provided three assists, marking his most successful appearance for the Black and Whites. Tyson and Zivkovic were absent from these two games (Asteras and Kifisia), but their absence was never felt. And in this (especially at Kifissia) Despodov played an important role.

Despodov’s two great performances against Kifissia

Kirill Despodov was deployed on the right attacking wing, the position where Lucescu uses him most often, and the Bulgarian once again fulfilled his role. In fact, he was the player higher up the field (77) than Brandon Thomas (71) who turned further back on the field several times, as we can see in the Opta Stats/Perform graph.

Despodov became an integral part of a well-tuned machine

Lucescu held him the entire game and Despontov finished the game with 58 actions with the ball. In fact, ten of them were in the Anagnostopoulos area. It was the highest performance by a Dikefalo player in the league, behind Tomas’ 11 appearances against Lamia.

In one of these ten actions, Despodov scored with a beautiful shot from deep. Where it stood out from Kifissia was the creation part. Created four finals All three even provided assists for his teammates (for goals from Thomas, Murg and Ozdoev).

Despodov became an integral part of a well-tuned machine

At the same time he had four successful dribbles a record performance by a PAOK player in 90 minutes. Because Despodov was high up the pitch, he didn’t have many passes, but he had a very good scoring rate 26/32 precise passes.

The Bulgarian started perfectly at PAOK, but gradually experienced a slight decline as his role in Dikefalos is different to the one he had in Ludogorets. But now he shows that he is fully integrated, which is clear from both his appearances and his statements.

The summer addition of Despontov and the return of Murg gave Lucescu the opportunity to comfortably and successfully navigate the league and Conference League by splitting time and opening up the rotation. These two footballers were able to adequately fill the gap left by Živković and Tyson, who were missing in the last few games.
