AEK – PAOK 1-1: Stands back in OAKA with the Brilliant Kurtic

PAOK, despite being in goal from the 19th minute with ten players and Jasmine Kurtic’s goal again, clinched the point of the tie against AEK at the Olympic Stadium, with the hosts leading but not able.

The postponed derby of Game 17 between AEK and PAOK ended in a 1-1 draw with both teams claiming a point and falling behind Olympiakos, but if this derby satisfies anyone then it’s surely his biceps.

Who, with another goal from the brilliant Jasmine Kurtic with a foul and error from Tsintotas, managed to stall the game and stay in OAKA for one more game, keeping the +7 lead on AEK and his unbeaten streak course to enlarge championship.

All this while the game went in favor of AEK, since Razvan Lucescu’s team was left with ten players of 19′ after the dismissal of Tsigaras with the use of VAR.

And he was lucky enough to put the lead on with a lovely goal from Garcia with a header from a Mandalo cross in the 28th minute, but then didn’t threaten to take more advantage of the player and score another goal.

With changes the two teams

On his debut on the bench, Socrates Ofridopoulos made two changes compared to the Panathinaikos defeat: Simanski and Mandalo returned to the starting XI and Sachov and Amrabat remained on the bench. The eleven of AEK consisted of them Tsintota, Rota, Vranies, Javella, Mohammadi, Simoes, Simanski, Mandalo, Chuber, Garcia, Araύjo.

On the other hand, Lutsescu made several changes, having at his disposal Crespo, Ingason, Kurtic and Akpom, who started in the starting line-up, while the eleven that made up the Romanian coach consisted of Paschalakis, Lyratzi, Crespo, Ingassia, Tzie Kurtic consisted. Augusto, Biseswar, Leo Zampa and Akpom.

The game started with PAOK in advantage, who threatened Augustos twice but failed to get ahead of the game.

The yellow that turned red

In the 15th minute we had the phase that played a decisive development in the continuation of the game. Tsigaras committed a foul on Araouchos in midfield, the match’s referee, Italy’s Fabri, showed him a yellow card. However, the referee of the match was called by VAR to see the phase again and in the end he changed his decision, showed the red card and from the 19th minute PAOK played with one player down.

This led to AEK getting the ball more on their feet and starting to threaten. In fact, the hosts hit the net in their first good moment. It was in the 28th minute when Mandalos made a cross from the right while Livai Garcia jumped higher, catching his head and beating Paschalakis to make it 1-0.

Kurtic’s 15th goal

In the 36th minute, PAOK won a foul outside the box and on the right flank, essentially on the edge of the box, with Kourtis going over the ball. But nobody expected the Slovene to be executed directly. But the league’s top scorer tried. He managed to put the ball through the wall and from the moment Tsintotas didn’t expect it, he took advantage of the Greek goalkeeper’s miscalculation and sent the ball into the net.

It was Kurtic’s 15th goal in the league, who is also this season’s top scorer and scores in every aspect and position.

Paschalakis kept the 1-1

AEK scored in the 38th minute after a nice combination between Araouchos and Mandalos and took the lead. The hosts’ center forward was the one who crossed the lead to AEK’s leader, who took his head from the height of the small space. Paschalakis, on the other hand, kept the 1-1 with a saving action in the right corner when he sent the corner kick.

This was actually the last phase in the first part, where the two teams went to the dressing room to get instructions from the two coaches.

AEK didn’t play properly

The second part started with no changes for either team and with AEK knowing that they have the advantage in numbers, that they could put more pressure on PAOK and that over time it would be logical that the guests would have additional fatigue.

As expected, AEK had the lead and the ball at foot, the visitors played from low meters and watched with double defensive zones to keep the 1-1.

The hosts didn’t have patience in their game, they made hasty moves and didn’t get into Paschalakis’ penalty area and only tried to threaten with long-range shots. It is significant that the best moment of the second half for AEK came in 63′ with Mohammadi’s shot, which went slightly wide.

With his changes, Ofridopoulos tried to make his team better and more aggressive to find the 2-1 that would bring him the win. On the other hand, Lucescu tried to give his team room to breathe with his own interventions in the game.

Two good moments at the end, PAOK demanded a penalty

In the delays of the game, AEK had its two best moments in the second half. First in the 90′, Ansarifard took the header from a cross from the left, the ball landing just short of Paschalakis’ left bar.

While Tankovic was in the box at 90+3, he attempted a shot from the top of the box, but Paschalakis blocked the ball again.

Meanwhile, on a mark from Vranies, PAOK and Akpom, in particular, demanded a penalty from the match referee and VAR, but to continue play.

Despodov became an integral part of a well-coordinated machine: the two great performances against Kifissia

Kirill Despodov put in his best performance with the PAOK jersey in the 2023 final and showed that he has fully integrated into Razvan Lucescu’s group. The Bulgarian midfielder’s outstanding performances against Kifissia.

PAOK ideally completed its commitments before the end of 2023, when it passed Kaisariani with full football and played the newly enlightened Kifissia.

Lucescu’s men produced their most productive performance in this year’s Stoiximan Super League, finishing second in threat as their 15 final appearances were valuable 2.29 xGoals. The previous event happened three days ago in Tripoli when they beat Asteras 4-1. Thomas Murg’s star shone in this game. In Caesariani, Kirill Despodov was MVP.

The Bulgarian midfielder was one of six goalscorers for the Black and Whites and provided three assists, marking his most successful appearance for the Black and Whites. Tyson and Zivkovic were absent from these two games (Asteras and Kifisia), but their absence was never felt. And in this (especially at Kifissia) Despodov played an important role.

Despodov’s two great performances against Kifissia

Kirill Despodov was deployed on the right attacking wing, the position where Lucescu uses him most often, and the Bulgarian once again fulfilled his role. In fact, he was the player higher up the field (77) than Brandon Thomas (71) who turned further back on the field several times, as we can see in the Opta Stats/Perform graph.

Despodov became an integral part of a well-tuned machine

Lucescu held him the entire game and Despontov finished the game with 58 actions with the ball. In fact, ten of them were in the Anagnostopoulos area. It was the highest performance by a Dikefalo player in the league, behind Tomas’ 11 appearances against Lamia.

In one of these ten actions, Despodov scored with a beautiful shot from deep. Where it stood out from Kifissia was the creation part. Created four finals All three even provided assists for his teammates (for goals from Thomas, Murg and Ozdoev).

Despodov became an integral part of a well-tuned machine

At the same time he had four successful dribbles a record performance by a PAOK player in 90 minutes. Because Despodov was high up the pitch, he didn’t have many passes, but he had a very good scoring rate 26/32 precise passes.

The Bulgarian started perfectly at PAOK, but gradually experienced a slight decline as his role in Dikefalos is different to the one he had in Ludogorets. But now he shows that he is fully integrated, which is clear from both his appearances and his statements.

The summer addition of Despontov and the return of Murg gave Lucescu the opportunity to comfortably and successfully navigate the league and Conference League by splitting time and opening up the rotation. These two footballers were able to adequately fill the gap left by Živković and Tyson, who were missing in the last few games.
