The die-hard PAOK don’t lose with Kurtic scoring
Savvas Giombanoglou writes about PAOK, who suffered from being down a player but showed character in the derby with AEK and left OAKA with their heads held high.
PAOK refused to lose to AEK even though they played ten against eleven from the first twenty minutes and found themselves trailing in 28 minutes. When Kurtic injured AEK again eight minutes later with a direct foul and scored a goal he described as lucky, he proved “too tough to die”, leaving with a tie and his head held high.
However, when the Slovenian midfielder scores, PAOK doesn’t lose. This has been the rule so far and has been verified again with the Union.
Abortion changed everything
Lutsescu’s plans were thwarted when Haris Tsingaras was sent off, forcing PAOK to play at a numerical disadvantage from the 20th minute. First, Romanian coach Douglas Augusto pulled back with a 4-4-1. Since then, he has relinquished the ball to AEK and defended in two zones to keep it as far out of Paschalakis’ area as possible.
PAOK may have lagged behind on the score, but it has responded. He arrived with his “shooter”, Jasmine Kurtic, and then struggled to hold the tie.
Lucescu wants his team to dominate, use good ball movement to gain possession and build up their attacks rationally. Something PAOK attempted with AEK early in the derby and before the numerical records get disrupted.
He suffered but endured showing character
Tsigaras’ dismissal gave the Romanian a chance to see other advantages of the ten players he had on the field. Things that mainly concerned the overlaps, the distances between the lines to keep the whole thing solid and most importantly the battle his players fought for every ball.
Razvan Lucescu’s solemn reaction as soon as Fabri blew the whistle showed in training that he was completely satisfied with his players’ performances. They had to fight to keep OAKA intact, even while employing a play style where they are not used. However, they showed maturity, they showed the character and mentality of a team that, against all odds, did not want to lose.
The conclusions regarding Ghent
In the end, developing the game against AEK could have been beneficial for PAOK. From the point of view that he has suffered, that his tenacity has been tested, his endurance under pressure from the opponent and, above all, the personality of his players and their ability to keep the desired score.
In knockout games like the one against Gent, which is already a priority for Lutsescu’s side, perhaps all those elements he showed in OAKA will prove crucial to qualifying.
What was the result of Razvan Lucescu’s selection for next Thursday’s game against Gent in Toumba? The defensive line-up that has the lead for the game against Belgium with Lyratzis, Ingason, Crespo and Vierinia in a quartet ahead of Paschalakis. With Kurtic, Augusto and Tsingara in midfield, they are the most likely midfield team.
Akpom at the forefront of the attack, Biseswar forced Lutsescu to incessantly and obviously use Zivkovic instead of Zampa.
If Paschalakis exits the equation, only Zampa and Biseswar will start in the game against Ionikos from the side that played in Wednesday’s OAKA derby, and logically very few of the other eight will feature in Lamia’s last game of the regular season.
In any case, the game with Gent will monopolize Dikefalos’ interest from now on.

Despodov became an integral part of a well-coordinated machine: the two great performances against Kifissia
Kirill Despodov put in his best performance with the PAOK jersey in the 2023 final and showed that he has fully integrated into Razvan Lucescu’s group. The Bulgarian midfielder’s outstanding performances against Kifissia.
PAOK ideally completed its commitments before the end of 2023, when it passed Kaisariani with full football and played the newly enlightened Kifissia.
Lucescu’s men produced their most productive performance in this year’s Stoiximan Super League, finishing second in threat as their 15 final appearances were valuable 2.29 xGoals. The previous event happened three days ago in Tripoli when they beat Asteras 4-1. Thomas Murg’s star shone in this game. In Caesariani, Kirill Despodov was MVP.
The Bulgarian midfielder was one of six goalscorers for the Black and Whites and provided three assists, marking his most successful appearance for the Black and Whites. Tyson and Zivkovic were absent from these two games (Asteras and Kifisia), but their absence was never felt. And in this (especially at Kifissia) Despodov played an important role.
Despodov’s two great performances against Kifissia
Kirill Despodov was deployed on the right attacking wing, the position where Lucescu uses him most often, and the Bulgarian once again fulfilled his role. In fact, he was the player higher up the field (77) than Brandon Thomas (71) who turned further back on the field several times, as we can see in the Opta Stats/Perform graph.
Lucescu held him the entire game and Despontov finished the game with 58 actions with the ball. In fact, ten of them were in the Anagnostopoulos area. It was the highest performance by a Dikefalo player in the league, behind Tomas’ 11 appearances against Lamia.
In one of these ten actions, Despodov scored with a beautiful shot from deep. Where it stood out from Kifissia was the creation part. Created four finals All three even provided assists for his teammates (for goals from Thomas, Murg and Ozdoev).
At the same time he had four successful dribbles a record performance by a PAOK player in 90 minutes. Because Despodov was high up the pitch, he didn’t have many passes, but he had a very good scoring rate 26/32 precise passes.
The Bulgarian started perfectly at PAOK, but gradually experienced a slight decline as his role in Dikefalos is different to the one he had in Ludogorets. But now he shows that he is fully integrated, which is clear from both his appearances and his statements.
The summer addition of Despontov and the return of Murg gave Lucescu the opportunity to comfortably and successfully navigate the league and Conference League by splitting time and opening up the rotation. These two footballers were able to adequately fill the gap left by Živković and Tyson, who were missing in the last few games.
