The forgotten project of AEK with Latchi – Mitai and the reverse case of Kornezos

How ‘fancy’ projects Mitai and Laci get lost in AEK’s football alum and who the Kornezos is that Ofridopoulos is bringing up front.

A few months ago, at the beginning of last summer, there was a widespread impression that this season would be a year of launch and establishment of two very remarkable projects of young players of the team. That was ultimately the plan voiced by the folks at AEK. The current year should be the year Mario Mitai and Ziga Latchi would become members of the wider rotation of the first group. Instead, they aren’t even permanently key in the second group.

Generally ill, with managerial changes and the inability of Socrates Ofridopoulos’ predecessors to establish a clear competitive position in the Union, their exploitation turned into marginalization. There were some injury issues, but that wasn’t the point. The association had neither the method nor the desire to get involved in the funding process. He chose to “park” them in AEK B, where they don’t stand out either.

The Slovenian Laci was disappointed by the development. Last year he won 11 league games with the first team, struggling in some and excelling in others. He was one of the standouts in away wins against Aris and OFI, in a 1-1 draw with Panathinaikos in Leoforos, while his presence brought AEK three more wins. He didn’t wait for his “relegation” to the second team and wanted to go somewhere on loan in January to play while he was in the first division. The way was not found.

Mario Mitai

Albanian Mitai made 10 appearances in the league last year – and once in the Europa League, when Leicester lost 2-0 at OAKA – he had 2 assists in that insane 4-3 in favor of AEK in Rizoupoli against Apollon Smyrni and Er expected him to be the team’s second left-back this year. Union currently have 32-year-old Hadjisafi as a backup (sometimes a key player) and it’s debatable what he really gains from the process.

AEK B’s 20 games in the Super League 2 Championship both count from just 9 appearances. Sometimes they were called up to the first-team bench out of necessity, but they didn’t play at all in this year’s major category championship. This is clearly more of a setback season than a development. Two children of great talent and great prospects, lost in the Union’s general captivity to a football plan that didn’t exist.

George Kornezos

24-year-old Giorgos Kornezos is trying to find the path they lost. A dynamic central defender, significantly taller than 18-year-old Mitai and 19-year-old Lachi, who is one of the most consistent second-team players in 2nd division with 19 90-minute appearances, 2 goals and 19 90-minute appearances 1 help.

Socrates Ofridopoulos promoted him this year and now invites him to the first team due to the absence of the penalized Vranies and despite the presence of three central defenders (Tzavellas, Mitoglou, Svarnas). Don’t be surprised if we see him and he’s playing.

Despodov became an integral part of a well-coordinated machine: the two great performances against Kifissia

Kirill Despodov put in his best performance with the PAOK jersey in the 2023 final and showed that he has fully integrated into Razvan Lucescu’s group. The Bulgarian midfielder’s outstanding performances against Kifissia.

PAOK ideally completed its commitments before the end of 2023, when it passed Kaisariani with full football and played the newly enlightened Kifissia.

Lucescu’s men produced their most productive performance in this year’s Stoiximan Super League, finishing second in threat as their 15 final appearances were valuable 2.29 xGoals. The previous event happened three days ago in Tripoli when they beat Asteras 4-1. Thomas Murg’s star shone in this game. In Caesariani, Kirill Despodov was MVP.

The Bulgarian midfielder was one of six goalscorers for the Black and Whites and provided three assists, marking his most successful appearance for the Black and Whites. Tyson and Zivkovic were absent from these two games (Asteras and Kifisia), but their absence was never felt. And in this (especially at Kifissia) Despodov played an important role.

Despodov’s two great performances against Kifissia

Kirill Despodov was deployed on the right attacking wing, the position where Lucescu uses him most often, and the Bulgarian once again fulfilled his role. In fact, he was the player higher up the field (77) than Brandon Thomas (71) who turned further back on the field several times, as we can see in the Opta Stats/Perform graph.

Despodov became an integral part of a well-tuned machine

Lucescu held him the entire game and Despontov finished the game with 58 actions with the ball. In fact, ten of them were in the Anagnostopoulos area. It was the highest performance by a Dikefalo player in the league, behind Tomas’ 11 appearances against Lamia.

In one of these ten actions, Despodov scored with a beautiful shot from deep. Where it stood out from Kifissia was the creation part. Created four finals All three even provided assists for his teammates (for goals from Thomas, Murg and Ozdoev).

At the same time he had four successful dribbles a record performance by a PAOK player in 90 minutes. Because Despodov was high up the pitch, he didn’t have many passes, but he had a very good scoring rate 26/32 precise passes.

The Bulgarian started perfectly at PAOK, but gradually experienced a slight decline as his role in Dikefalos is different to the one he had in Ludogorets. But now he shows that he is fully integrated, which is clear from both his appearances and his statements.

The summer addition of Despontov and the return of Murg gave Lucescu the opportunity to comfortably and successfully navigate the league and Conference League by splitting time and opening up the rotation. These two footballers were able to adequately fill the gap left by Živković and Tyson, who were missing in the last few games.
