Hadjisafi’s first specimen on the axis and the inaccessible Mohammadi

Ehsan Hadjisafi returned to the axis for the first time in a long time, leaving mixed feelings about his presence in the position he was established in before AEK. Alongside Union’s goalscorers against Asteras, Mohammadi also had a positive presence in the blocking part and made for a record-breaking performance.

Fulfilling his commitments for the regular period of Super League Interwetten with his right hand, AEK prevailed 2-1 against Asteras Tripolis in OAKA, with Sergio Araouchos starring for another game while Giorgos Tzavellas scored the winning goal.

In that particular game, Socrates Ofridopoulos made his first ‘cut’ in the team by using Ehsan Hadjisafi in midfield from the start. His two predecessors (Milojevic, Giannikis) did not dare, who used it a total of three times during short participations in the Axis.

Ofridopoulos gave him his first chance at a position he’s played more at in recent years (including with Iran national team), although he rose to prominence in Greece as a left-back with the shirts of Panionios and Olympiakos.

In his first big rehearsal (which lasted 57 minutes as he was in Ofridopoulos’ first change group), Hadjisafi didn’t fare badly, but he definitely had better performances in the AEK shirt, like the one with Ionikos in Nice.

Link between defense and attack

Before Hadjisafi left the field, the 32-year-old international was AEK’s fourth player to pass. 32 in total and secondly in passes to half of Asteras, with 17 overall. In 1/3 of Asteras he was second, only behind Mandalos, with 7/9 targeted transfers.

In the Opta Stats/Perform chart, we see Hadjisafi’s targeted transfers. The accuracy of his transfers was on 90% throughout the stadium 88.6% in half of Asteras. He had the highest percentage of accuracy on passes than any other AEK player, with the exception of Svarna, who took the field at 90+2′ and had a well-aimed pass.

Hadjisafi was mainly paired with players he had on his side. He attempted a couple of long shots (six total) and only one was successful.

In the chart showing the Union’s transfer network, we see, among other things, the players that Hadjisafi has been paired with. Except for Simoes, with whom he traded most passes, he shared them with players close to him like Mandalos, Mitoglou and Michelen, while feeding Araouchos three times.

The positive presence of Mohammadi in the blocking part

Milad Mohammadi also played a good, but equally calm game, but offered little in attack. The Iranian rear took initiatives and had a total 27 passes in half by Asteras.

At the same time, he got a pretty good grade in the suspension tasks, with two performances that are personal records. He was the first in Possession (8), which is a record for him. His good performance so far came in the game against Atromitos at OAKA, where he had seven possessions.

At the same time he did five successful duels (none was a mistake), and it was two thefts. As for the second stat dominated by Ofridopoulos players, only Simos was Mitoglou who stole the ball three times. Mohammadi’s five tackles is his personal record, while Hadjisafi had the same number of successful tackles against OFI in Heraklion and Simanski with Lamia in OAKA.

AEK saw that the two Iranians painted a positive image, Hadjisafi operated in a different position and Mohammadi returned to good performances after a long time. Looking ahead to the playoffs, the concrete messages for Socrates Ofridopoulos are very positive.

Despodov became an integral part of a well-coordinated machine: the two great performances against Kifissia

Kirill Despodov put in his best performance with the PAOK jersey in the 2023 final and showed that he has fully integrated into Razvan Lucescu’s group. The Bulgarian midfielder’s outstanding performances against Kifissia.

PAOK ideally completed its commitments before the end of 2023, when it passed Kaisariani with full football and played the newly enlightened Kifissia.

Lucescu’s men produced their most productive performance in this year’s Stoiximan Super League, finishing second in threat as their 15 final appearances were valuable 2.29 xGoals. The previous event happened three days ago in Tripoli when they beat Asteras 4-1. Thomas Murg’s star shone in this game. In Caesariani, Kirill Despodov was MVP.

The Bulgarian midfielder was one of six goalscorers for the Black and Whites and provided three assists, marking his most successful appearance for the Black and Whites. Tyson and Zivkovic were absent from these two games (Asteras and Kifisia), but their absence was never felt. And in this (especially at Kifissia) Despodov played an important role.

Despodov’s two great performances against Kifissia

Kirill Despodov was deployed on the right attacking wing, the position where Lucescu uses him most often, and the Bulgarian once again fulfilled his role. In fact, he was the player higher up the field (77) than Brandon Thomas (71) who turned further back on the field several times, as we can see in the Opta Stats/Perform graph.

Despodov became an integral part of a well-tuned machine

Lucescu held him the entire game and Despontov finished the game with 58 actions with the ball. In fact, ten of them were in the Anagnostopoulos area. It was the highest performance by a Dikefalo player in the league, behind Tomas’ 11 appearances against Lamia.

In one of these ten actions, Despodov scored with a beautiful shot from deep. Where it stood out from Kifissia was the creation part. Created four finals All three even provided assists for his teammates (for goals from Thomas, Murg and Ozdoev).

Despodov became an integral part of a well-tuned machine

At the same time he had four successful dribbles a record performance by a PAOK player in 90 minutes. Because Despodov was high up the pitch, he didn’t have many passes, but he had a very good scoring rate 26/32 precise passes.

The Bulgarian started perfectly at PAOK, but gradually experienced a slight decline as his role in Dikefalos is different to the one he had in Ludogorets. But now he shows that he is fully integrated, which is clear from both his appearances and his statements.

The summer addition of Despontov and the return of Murg gave Lucescu the opportunity to comfortably and successfully navigate the league and Conference League by splitting time and opening up the rotation. These two footballers were able to adequately fill the gap left by Živković and Tyson, who were missing in the last few games.
