Dimitris Melissanidis: “The Museum of Refugee Hellenism is a repository for lives and dreams”
The powerful man of PAE AEK, Dimitris Melissanidis, inaugurated the “Museum of Refugee Hellenism,” located in the OPAP Arena.
Saturday (November 18th) was important for the AEK family. The Union opened the “Museum of Refugee Hellenism,” located in the OPAP Arena.
Dimitris Melissanidis, in his speech during the event, referred to a depository of life and dreams, a museum that will symbolize the history of centuries.
His speech in detail:
“In the difficult times in which we live with two open wars in Europe and the Middle East, it is a great consolation to open the Museum of Refugee Hellenism, a museum with priceless relics from Constantinople, Pontus and Asia Minor. I hope that this is the case.” The museum will always be an enrichment in the future and will symbolize the history of centuries for the next generations.
With God’s help we were able to present two important achievements today. We founded two brilliant projects. AEK’s stadium jewel, the OPAP Arena, rightly considered the best in the country, but also this museum of refugee Hellenism entitled “The Ark of Romiosyny”, as it was named by its two godfathers. The great Mikis Theodorakis and Eleni Glykatzi-Arveler.
But soon the third child will be born, the AEK museum. The children of AEK are triplets and are unfolding the legacy of a historic club, but also of the millions of friends of our team. What you see here is an antidote to the greatness of the hundreds of thousands of Asia Minor and Pontians who live from one end to the other throughout Greece. They are deposits of life and dreams, they are the flowers of piety, of this whole world that left the unruly and untamed homelands and created the epic of the new Greece.
I find it very moving that dozens of anonymous people come every day and leave a piece that is their talisman, the hidden legacy of their ancestors that they carry tightly in their hearts. Great personalities in our country have left their mark. The master of the Greek economy, Aristotle Onassis, Dimitris Psathas, the journalist who moved mountains and changed regimes with his sharp pen. Lefteris Papadopoulos, who wrote half of the Greek song. Giorgos Dalaras and Haris Alexiou, who sang about Asia Minor, this work by Apostolos Kardaras that moves all Greeks. I would say that a titan of Greek singing, Stelios Kazantzidis, is also in this museum, he will see it from up there and his soul will rejoice.
It is most obvious that there is a unifying link in these pages of history, and that is Sunny Orthodoxy. Since Orthodoxy is wealth and the root of immortality, it inspired those who fought for the liberation of the homeland and us who never want to forget it. The fact of your presence today makes me happy, it gives me the liberating feeling that I too, as one of you, did my duty when the time came. You will soon take a walk through this museum, it is a walk through the history of Greece, Asia Minor and Pontus.
With shock and awe, ordinary people gave us something unique to them, like an icon. This room is the seven-flame lamp that always burns in every refugee’s heart and in which Nosto, that is, the good return, lies and until the end of the world this longing will not leave any of our hearts. Finally, I would like to thank Mr. Ilias Papageorgiou and his team as well as the leader of the entire project, our lawyer, Ms. Efi Mavropoulou.”

Despodov became an integral part of a well-coordinated machine: the two great performances against Kifissia
Kirill Despodov put in his best performance with the PAOK jersey in the 2023 final and showed that he has fully integrated into Razvan Lucescu’s group. The Bulgarian midfielder’s outstanding performances against Kifissia.
PAOK ideally completed its commitments before the end of 2023, when it passed Kaisariani with full football and played the newly enlightened Kifissia.
Lucescu’s men produced their most productive performance in this year’s Stoiximan Super League, finishing second in threat as their 15 final appearances were valuable 2.29 xGoals. The previous event happened three days ago in Tripoli when they beat Asteras 4-1. Thomas Murg’s star shone in this game. In Caesariani, Kirill Despodov was MVP.
The Bulgarian midfielder was one of six goalscorers for the Black and Whites and provided three assists, marking his most successful appearance for the Black and Whites. Tyson and Zivkovic were absent from these two games (Asteras and Kifisia), but their absence was never felt. And in this (especially at Kifissia) Despodov played an important role.
Despodov’s two great performances against Kifissia
Kirill Despodov was deployed on the right attacking wing, the position where Lucescu uses him most often, and the Bulgarian once again fulfilled his role. In fact, he was the player higher up the field (77) than Brandon Thomas (71) who turned further back on the field several times, as we can see in the Opta Stats/Perform graph.
Lucescu held him the entire game and Despontov finished the game with 58 actions with the ball. In fact, ten of them were in the Anagnostopoulos area. It was the highest performance by a Dikefalo player in the league, behind Tomas’ 11 appearances against Lamia.
In one of these ten actions, Despodov scored with a beautiful shot from deep. Where it stood out from Kifissia was the creation part. Created four finals All three even provided assists for his teammates (for goals from Thomas, Murg and Ozdoev).
At the same time he had four successful dribbles a record performance by a PAOK player in 90 minutes. Because Despodov was high up the pitch, he didn’t have many passes, but he had a very good scoring rate 26/32 precise passes.
The Bulgarian started perfectly at PAOK, but gradually experienced a slight decline as his role in Dikefalos is different to the one he had in Ludogorets. But now he shows that he is fully integrated, which is clear from both his appearances and his statements.
The summer addition of Despontov and the return of Murg gave Lucescu the opportunity to comfortably and successfully navigate the league and Conference League by splitting time and opening up the rotation. These two footballers were able to adequately fill the gap left by Živković and Tyson, who were missing in the last few games.
