Waiting for decisions at Olympiakos: The two thoughts about Martinez’s future
Decisions about Diego Martinez’s future are pending at Olympiakos, with the red and whites having to choose between two paths.
Olympiacos awaits crucial decisions after the Freiburg crash in Germany. A result that was a continuation of PAOK’s heavy defeat in Faliro a few weeks ago, but also the fact that the red and whites have only won one big game this season, that against West Ham in Karaiskakis.
Vangelis Marinakis knows the situation in the team exactly, listens to people and will immediately provide guidelines. There are currently two streets. The first is to support Martinez if they believe in management that he can change the situation and want to continue with the model that they trusted in the summer (Cordon – Martinez). The second is to change coaches if they think the Spaniard can’t make a difference.
The major shareholder of Olympiakos has the big picture in mind and according to reports he will hold talks with his close colleagues in the administration, but also with Antonio Cordon as well as Pedro Alves, who is expected to take over in Greece on the same day Responsibilities of the technical director in the Piraeus Group.
Of course, every decision carries its own risk. Will Olympiakos’ image improve with Martinez’s support or will there be more bad results? Will things get better if there is a change of coach? And who will he be? Will he have the size to develop the team immediately?
For now, the two sides of the coin are as follows: Martinez and the players are the ones who beat West Ham, led Olympiakos to qualify for the Europa League group stage, put them one step ahead for the continuation in the Conference League and you had it until the cracker in the derby with Panathinaikos in first place in the league. But even after the penalty, the red and whites are one point behind the leaders.
On the other hand, Martinez and the players bear the main responsibility for Freiburg’s five goals and Dikefalos’ four goals, for their lack of reaction in the above-mentioned games, for Backa Topola’s draw in Serbia (from 0-2, to 2-2) , for the poor first half against Panathinaikos, for not winning a derby in the league and for the problematic blocking function in most games of the season.
So we wait for decisions, all while Olympiacos have back-to-back league and European games ahead of them until Christmas.
