Lucescu: “We will strengthen ourselves with the right players, I want Tyson to stay”
At the press conference after PAOK’s win over Lamia, when asked about transfers, Razvan Lucescu emphasized that his team was looking for the best possible, while when asked about Tyson’s whereabouts, he stated that he would like to stay in the team.
Razvan Lucescu had a lot of interesting things to say at the press conference after PAOK’s win over Lamia, with Roumanos answering about his team’s image, advocating for transfers and talking about Tyson and his quality and extending his contract.
For the image of his team and what was most important in this game:
“I expected us to score more goals, we had a lot of chances and had to take them. When you get these chances, you have to shoot them. We had a team against us that played very well this year and caused problems.” We had a difficult and demanding game in Frankfurt, but we showed a good mentality and had the right energy on the pitch.
We had a win in Germany that could have been a cause for concern, but the players showed a really good attitude today. Our win today is completely logical because we were better in all areas.”
On the fact that PAOK’s center forwards have scored 10 out of 51 goals so far:
“I tell you that the other 41 goals were also scored by our players. It doesn’t matter who scores, the goal is to go on the pitch and play well, win and score goals. If the other 41 have scored goals, it means that they and the strikers have done a good job, because the goals also come from the actions of the strikers, who create space with their movements.
All players are involved in the goals and that is the most important thing because the strikers help us by creating space for others. It’s a huge task, both when we have the ball and when we don’t. Our strikers make a big contribution and are not only measured by their goals.”
On what he said to Constantelia when he was caught on camera laughing and talking to him:
“It was about something for the next games. If it had been anything else, I would have told you.”
On the question of whether he would like to improve something in the team at a time when everything seems to be going well:
“It has to do with the mental thing, how we go from one game to the next. We have to stay focused. We have four games in eleven days. We had this game against Eintracht, now we played against Lamia, games that every single one of us has.” They use up a lot of mental energy.
We have to treat every game as a final and forget the results the next morning. We had a lot of fun in Frankfurt and had to find a balance. And now at Lamia we must immediately forget about the victory and concentrate on the game on Thursday, in a competition in which we want to reach the final again.
The team is getting better and stronger step by step because the level of adaptation of the new players is increasing. We’ve had tough games this whole time and our chemistry has improved a lot. All of this gives me confidence, the relationships between the players and the atmosphere that exists. We have so many players involved in everything we do this year. We had eight changes in the team compared to last year and the boys responded very well to them.”
On Tyson, whether he can be a role model for young players and whether he expected to have that image this year:
“Last winter this player was suggested to me by Giorgos Savvidis and I immediately said yes. I said yes because I know what kind of player he is, what quality he has and what desire he has to play. I know him because my father had that. “As a player, I knew his love for sports and training. In Brazil he had an injury and needed time, he started to adapt and showed tremendous quality.
He plays incredible football. On whether he can serve as a role model: He and Andre are always among the young players, and I don’t know if Tyson and Andre are those… young ones or if it’s Constantelias and Koulierakis. Sometimes it’s the other way around! They have the soul of little children, Tyson and Andre are very important to the group we have built.”
On Tyson’s contract extension:
“I don’t know what to tell you about renewing Tyson. We play every three days, we have a lot of work every day. I wake up at five in the morning to analyze the games. Management knows what I want and “What are we going to do with the Tyson thing too? When we start losing focus on various other issues, we lose what we have achieved so far. I have to protect the work we do.
I know very well that it is easy to lose concentration when you deviate. I understand the journalists’ need for topics, but we have to stick with it and concentrate on the games. If you ask me if Tyson should be here, I say yes, he should be. Tyson is one of our best players, the favorite of the platform, he is happy here.”
Regarding the conversation with Savvidis with the transcripts and his own wish:
“Are you from the existing squad? If something better can be done and we can get better, then it’s good for us. If there is something better, we will see what can be done. That applies to all teams, if we have a chance to find capable players to improve the squad then we would like to do that.”

Despodov became an integral part of a well-coordinated machine: the two great performances against Kifissia
Kirill Despodov put in his best performance with the PAOK jersey in the 2023 final and showed that he has fully integrated into Razvan Lucescu’s group. The Bulgarian midfielder’s outstanding performances against Kifissia.
PAOK ideally completed its commitments before the end of 2023, when it passed Kaisariani with full football and played the newly enlightened Kifissia.
Lucescu’s men produced their most productive performance in this year’s Stoiximan Super League, finishing second in threat as their 15 final appearances were valuable 2.29 xGoals. The previous event happened three days ago in Tripoli when they beat Asteras 4-1. Thomas Murg’s star shone in this game. In Caesariani, Kirill Despodov was MVP.
The Bulgarian midfielder was one of six goalscorers for the Black and Whites and provided three assists, marking his most successful appearance for the Black and Whites. Tyson and Zivkovic were absent from these two games (Asteras and Kifisia), but their absence was never felt. And in this (especially at Kifissia) Despodov played an important role.
Despodov’s two great performances against Kifissia
Kirill Despodov was deployed on the right attacking wing, the position where Lucescu uses him most often, and the Bulgarian once again fulfilled his role. In fact, he was the player higher up the field (77) than Brandon Thomas (71) who turned further back on the field several times, as we can see in the Opta Stats/Perform graph.
Lucescu held him the entire game and Despontov finished the game with 58 actions with the ball. In fact, ten of them were in the Anagnostopoulos area. It was the highest performance by a Dikefalo player in the league, behind Tomas’ 11 appearances against Lamia.
In one of these ten actions, Despodov scored with a beautiful shot from deep. Where it stood out from Kifissia was the creation part. Created four finals All three even provided assists for his teammates (for goals from Thomas, Murg and Ozdoev).
At the same time he had four successful dribbles a record performance by a PAOK player in 90 minutes. Because Despodov was high up the pitch, he didn’t have many passes, but he had a very good scoring rate 26/32 precise passes.
The Bulgarian started perfectly at PAOK, but gradually experienced a slight decline as his role in Dikefalos is different to the one he had in Ludogorets. But now he shows that he is fully integrated, which is clear from both his appearances and his statements.
The summer addition of Despontov and the return of Murg gave Lucescu the opportunity to comfortably and successfully navigate the league and Conference League by splitting time and opening up the rotation. These two footballers were able to adequately fill the gap left by Živković and Tyson, who were missing in the last few games.
