Greek teams’ points in the UEFA club standings after the group finals
After the conclusion of the historic group stage of the UEFA competitions (as its format changes in the new year), Sportish presents you the data with the ratings of the Greek teams in the UEFA club rankings.
Our three representatives in the Europa League (AEK, Panathinaikos, Olympiacos) and PAOK in the Conference League have fulfilled their commitments in the historic group stage, as from next year the format of all three competitions will change at least until the 2026/27 season and The groups as we know them will not exist, but the 36 finalists will be placed in a single ranking.
The groups can be abolished, but the same does not apply to the four capacity groups (instead of eight teams there will now be nine) resulting from the club ranking of the finalists of each event.
Union and the Shamrocks have completed their European journey having failed to secure third place in their group and a ticket to the ’16’ Conference League playoffs, unlike Olympiakos who will continue there. PAOK secured first place in its group in the Conference League from matchday five and is already in the “16”.
Of course, all four of our teams (as well as Aris in qualifying) have played their part in helping Greece rise from 19th to 17th in the UEFA rankings, but they are not just playing for Greece’s rankings, but for theirs too own in the UEFA club rankings.
The Sportish shows you where the Greek teams stand after the group stage, where Ares AEK came close and how they can increase their points even further Olympiacos and PAOK that continue in Europe.
Olympiacos: Downward trajectory, but he stayed alive and hoping
Olympiacos entered this year’s draw with a coefficient 39,000 points (he was 46th in the UEFA ranking), i.e. the points he collected from the 2018/19 season up to and including the 2022/23 season.
In the 2018/19 season, Pedro Martins’ red and whites took part in the Europa League groups and finished second behind Betis and ahead of Milan and Duelange. In the round of 16 they were eliminated in the “32” against Dynamo Kiev and collected 8,000 points this season.
In the five-year ranking of Olympiacos, the harvest of the European year (2018/19) will no longer be counted in the coming season, but the harvest from the 2019/20 season up to this year (2023/24). The Reds and Whites have accumulated 5,000 points this season, all due to the points he collected in the Europa League group (2,000 for each win, 1,000 for the draw against Backa Topola in Serbia).
That’s why they currently have 36,000 points and are in 50th place. If this is their final result, they will be entered into the New Year’s drawing. To get more points, they need to get a win or a draw in the round of 16 of the Conference League and the following rounds. In the playoffs of the “16” of the Conference League, wins or draws have no influence on Greece’s ranking or on their own ranking.
How is Olympiacos doing at the moment?
- 2019/20: 10,000
- 2020/21: 10,000
- 2021/22: 8,000
- 2022/23: 3,000
- 2023/24: 5,000 (can raise more)
- Five-year total: 36,000 points
Olympiacos Piraeus will continue to be in a difficult position in the coming years if it does not make good progress, as its two best years, in which it accumulated 10,000 points, will be removed from the rankings. In order to stay high and have easy draws, he has to collect the appropriate points.
PAOK: Started with the second impressive course in the Conference League
Olympiacos Piraeus has been in first place among Greek teams in the UEFA club rankings for many years. The red and whites still retain the “scepter”, only now they feel the hot breath of PAOK, who already have the potential to overtake them this season.
PAOK ended its course in Europe at the beginning of last year (due to Levski’s exclusion) after 25,000 points (69th in the UEFA rankings), counting his successes from the 2018/19 season to the 2022/23 season.
This season (2018/19), Razvan Lucescu’s PAOK (who won the double in Greece) reached the Champions League playoffs in Europe, where they were eliminated by Benfica. Despite an impressive performance in qualifying for Europe’s top club competition, they disappointed in the Europa League, finishing bottom of the group behind Chelsea, Vidy and Bate Borisov.
He received no points from the Champions League qualifiers (only teams eliminated from the Conference League receive from the qualifiers) and his presence in the groups earned him at least 3,000 points.
This season will be “deleted” from its rating and in its place will be replaced by this year’s very impressive one, as PAOK has accumulated 13,000 points, the same as two years ago when it reached the quarterfinals of the Conference League. The 11,000 points came from his results in the Conference League group, while he received 2,000 bonus points for winning the group. That’s largely how it is at the moment 35,000 points and is in 51st place.
In order to improve his rating, he must achieve wins or draws in the “16” phase of the Conference League and below. The bonus (1,000 points) is secured only in case of participation in the semi-finals and the final, which will be held in the OPAP Arena.
How PAOK’s rankings were formed:
- 2019/20: 2,500
- 2020/21: 5,000
- 2021/22: 13,000
- 2022/23: 1,500
- 2023/24: 13,000
- Five-year total: 35,000 points
PAOK has managed to improve its ranking in just two impressive years. Within his five-year record there are also two years in which he failed to qualify for the group stage, as well as the 2020/21 season in which he played in the Europa League but finished third.
AEK: Returning to the groups did not result in a rise in the rankings
After returning to the titles by winning the double last season, AEK returned to the groups of European competition with Matias Almeida. Last season he took part in the European competitions (and the draws) ranked 139th in the UEFA rankings 11,000 points.
The last season calculated in his ranking (2018/19) was also the second best since returning to the main categories (2015/16). AEK took part in the Champions League groups and collected the minimum bonus of 4,000 points, while not picking up another point in the group with Bayern, Ajax and Benfica.
This year, AEK once again achieved the minimum number of points it could achieve (3,000) with its presence in the Europa League, where it finished last with four points (not receiving a point from qualifying). In the 2020/21 season he also collected so many points that he took part in a Europa League group and recorded a win against Zoria and five defeats.
So this year AEK is finalizing its rankings 10,000 pointsafter simultaneously losing two places in the UEFA rankings (141st).
How AEK’s rating is structured:
- 2019/20: 2,500
- 2020/21: 3,000
- 2021/22: 1,500
- 2022/23: Excluded from Europe
- 2023/24: 3,000
- Five-year total: 10,000 points
Poor report from AEK in these five years. Two participations in a Europa League group with a minimal “stake” of points, two exclusions from qualification and of course the 2022/23 season, which won the double but did not take part in Europe at all.
Panathinaikos: And in the new season the Greek coefficient will continue
Panathinaikos returned to a European competition group after many years and while they had a positive presence in Champions League qualifying (except in Marseille), there was no comparable sequel in the Europa League.
The Greens received 2,000 points for their presence in the third qualifying round of the Conference League, where they were eliminated by Slavia Prague, and for their presence this year, where they secured the minimum participation in the Europa League group (3,000 points). they reached the 5,000 points This puts it at number 261.
However, it will continue in the new season with Greece’s quota, which is 20% of its total points. With current data, Panathinaikos will enter with the score 5,585 pointsa number that will increase if Olympiacos and PAOK bring more points to Greece.
This is how the Panathinaikos rankings were formed:
- 2019/20: no participation in Europe
- 2020/21: did not take part in Europe
- 2021/22: no participation in Europe
- 2022/23: 2,000
- 2023/24: 3,000
- Five-year total: 5,000 points
Panathinaikos started fresh last year to build its standings after previous difficult seasons that kept it out of Europe. He still has a long way to go and obviously needs to do a lot of overs to have easier draws.
Aris: Get it together, even if they are Rogers, but they are underdogs for Europe in the new season
Aris may not have qualified for a European group, but they managed to reduce the gap to AEK in the standings while moving up a step in the UEFA club rankings.
The Thessalonians have been represented in Europe for five consecutive years, but in none of those years have they managed to reach the group stage or the playoffs of the tournament. However, he gained points by participating in the qualification, as UEFA awards points to teams that take part in the qualification and do not secure a group.
So Aris finished the season last year with 7,000 points and now he’s done it 9,000 pointsin 153rd place.
How the Mars Score came about:
- 2019/20: 2,000
- 2020/21: 1,500
- 2021/22: 1,500
- 2022/23: 2,000
- 2023/24: 2,000
- Five-year total: 9,000 points
Aris had a stable presence in Europe, unlike AEK and Panathinaikos, who are also low, and although they failed to qualify in a group, they managed to build their own ranking. Of course, this season will be more difficult for the residents of Thessaloniki as there are four tickets instead of five and therefore they will have to make great efforts to secure a ticket for the sixth year in a row.

Despodov became an integral part of a well-coordinated machine: the two great performances against Kifissia
Kirill Despodov put in his best performance with the PAOK jersey in the 2023 final and showed that he has fully integrated into Razvan Lucescu’s group. The Bulgarian midfielder’s outstanding performances against Kifissia.
PAOK ideally completed its commitments before the end of 2023, when it passed Kaisariani with full football and played the newly enlightened Kifissia.
Lucescu’s men produced their most productive performance in this year’s Stoiximan Super League, finishing second in threat as their 15 final appearances were valuable 2.29 xGoals. The previous event happened three days ago in Tripoli when they beat Asteras 4-1. Thomas Murg’s star shone in this game. In Caesariani, Kirill Despodov was MVP.
The Bulgarian midfielder was one of six goalscorers for the Black and Whites and provided three assists, marking his most successful appearance for the Black and Whites. Tyson and Zivkovic were absent from these two games (Asteras and Kifisia), but their absence was never felt. And in this (especially at Kifissia) Despodov played an important role.
Despodov’s two great performances against Kifissia
Kirill Despodov was deployed on the right attacking wing, the position where Lucescu uses him most often, and the Bulgarian once again fulfilled his role. In fact, he was the player higher up the field (77) than Brandon Thomas (71) who turned further back on the field several times, as we can see in the Opta Stats/Perform graph.
Lucescu held him the entire game and Despontov finished the game with 58 actions with the ball. In fact, ten of them were in the Anagnostopoulos area. It was the highest performance by a Dikefalo player in the league, behind Tomas’ 11 appearances against Lamia.
In one of these ten actions, Despodov scored with a beautiful shot from deep. Where it stood out from Kifissia was the creation part. Created four finals All three even provided assists for his teammates (for goals from Thomas, Murg and Ozdoev).
At the same time he had four successful dribbles a record performance by a PAOK player in 90 minutes. Because Despodov was high up the pitch, he didn’t have many passes, but he had a very good scoring rate 26/32 precise passes.
The Bulgarian started perfectly at PAOK, but gradually experienced a slight decline as his role in Dikefalos is different to the one he had in Ludogorets. But now he shows that he is fully integrated, which is clear from both his appearances and his statements.
The summer addition of Despontov and the return of Murg gave Lucescu the opportunity to comfortably and successfully navigate the league and Conference League by splitting time and opening up the rotation. These two footballers were able to adequately fill the gap left by Živković and Tyson, who were missing in the last few games.
