Panathinaikos is in the most difficult moment of the Jovanovic era
Lambros Balafas writes about the crisis that Panathinaikos is going through, which is in the most difficult moment of the Jovanovic era.
The psychology of football changes quickly, two… wrong results and you’re immediately drowned in doubt and introspection.
Panathinaikos is going through a crisis, a deformation, even if Ivan Jovanovic has not officially admitted it. It’s clear that there are a number of personal mistakes that marred the whole thing, followed by European expulsion and relegation from the league, but when something repeats itself it usually has deeper roots.
Brignoli’s mistake and Lodingin’s chance
As with any goalkeeper, Brignoli’s mistakes are more noticeable than those of the other players on a team.
The Italian is not well, you can see it by his appearance, he is worried, he does not show the comfort, the self-confidence that forced everyone to vote him the best goalkeeper in the league. That happens, there were simply a lot of mistakes made that cost the conversation and took longer.
Beyond the obvious, losing ground in the standings, the biggest problem right now is Brignoli’s management.
After relying on Ren to remain number one, will the same thing happen now? What if not? Doesn’t Lodingin deserve to get his chances? Wouldn’t that be unfair to the Russian?
The differences compared to last year that don’t… go away
In my opinion, Brignoli’s mistakes are part of the problem, not the problem itself. Panathinaikos is in an identity crisis.
The greens have changed a lot compared to last year, this new, more aggressive style, until a while ago it worked, at the moment it doesn’t work anymore.
And it doesn’t work because the new… materials (the players acquired in the summer) don’t respond to the extent needed, or rather, to the needs of the system.
Last year Ruben didn’t play a minute, this year he played 11 out of 14 league games, 9 of them in the starting lineup, and that’s because players with more creative qualities in their game, like Arao and Villena, were included in the rotation.
And when you expect productivity and goals, you lose things in your defensive balance, slow returns and several more failures that are costly.
He wants a Magnuson… yesterday
And the slow returns, the poor reactions are linked to the crucial absences in the stoppers.
At first it looked like there were solutions to Magnuson and Palmer-Brown’s injuries, but there wasn’t.
Perhaps the proper functioning of the whole thing has “hidden” the truth, but above all the gap on Islan seems huge. He is the most skilled header player, he is the commander in defense, but also the player with the best first ball from the back zone.
And because there is still a long way to go until Magnuson’s return and none of the Cloverleaf’s existing central defenders can play their role, there is a need for reinforcements, especially in the front line.
It’s not a bad thing to go back to what started you
So on the one hand the new profile doesn’t seem to be working as expected, on the other hand there are failures, but also young people who haven’t made a difference, why shouldn’t a readjustment of the plan be one? Solution?
Why not go back to last year’s schedule, which didn’t have the problems we’re seeing now and seemed like a perfect fit?
The Greens have not exceeded their goals in Greece; changes at the top will logically be frequent as long as all the “big ones” are so close to each other.
However, in the worst case scenario, Panathinaikos from last year would not have lost a game like yesterday because they had taken the lead, this year’s team is not as strong.
How much more does Ioannidis have to do?
The day after the defeat against Maccabi that sealed their exclusion from Europe, I noticed the way Ioannidis played. What happened in Peristeri is all the more relevant.
The international striker appears hopelessly alone in attack as he lacks support. He is forced or asked to leave the penalty area to get the ball, duels with two or more opponents, becomes incredibly tired until he reaches the shooting position, loses some of his strength, empties himself until he takes the ball .
Clearly, Sporar is not in the right condition to complement him. A striker who will score the easy goal is just as necessary as Magnuson’s replacement.
The psychosis for the championship
Panathinaikos is in the most difficult moment of the Jovanovic era because the coach himself has increased the team and the demands (once again). Only victories will bring peace and restore faith in achieving the team’s goals.
The European blockade was disruptive, but to a normal extent. Joining the group was in itself an improvement over previous years.
However, the need for a championship is huge, the entire Panathinaikos organization has accepted it and cannot and does not want to live with anything less, it has become psychotic…

Despodov became an integral part of a well-coordinated machine: the two great performances against Kifissia
Kirill Despodov put in his best performance with the PAOK jersey in the 2023 final and showed that he has fully integrated into Razvan Lucescu’s group. The Bulgarian midfielder’s outstanding performances against Kifissia.
PAOK ideally completed its commitments before the end of 2023, when it passed Kaisariani with full football and played the newly enlightened Kifissia.
Lucescu’s men produced their most productive performance in this year’s Stoiximan Super League, finishing second in threat as their 15 final appearances were valuable 2.29 xGoals. The previous event happened three days ago in Tripoli when they beat Asteras 4-1. Thomas Murg’s star shone in this game. In Caesariani, Kirill Despodov was MVP.
The Bulgarian midfielder was one of six goalscorers for the Black and Whites and provided three assists, marking his most successful appearance for the Black and Whites. Tyson and Zivkovic were absent from these two games (Asteras and Kifisia), but their absence was never felt. And in this (especially at Kifissia) Despodov played an important role.
Despodov’s two great performances against Kifissia
Kirill Despodov was deployed on the right attacking wing, the position where Lucescu uses him most often, and the Bulgarian once again fulfilled his role. In fact, he was the player higher up the field (77) than Brandon Thomas (71) who turned further back on the field several times, as we can see in the Opta Stats/Perform graph.
Lucescu held him the entire game and Despontov finished the game with 58 actions with the ball. In fact, ten of them were in the Anagnostopoulos area. It was the highest performance by a Dikefalo player in the league, behind Tomas’ 11 appearances against Lamia.
In one of these ten actions, Despodov scored with a beautiful shot from deep. Where it stood out from Kifissia was the creation part. Created four finals All three even provided assists for his teammates (for goals from Thomas, Murg and Ozdoev).
At the same time he had four successful dribbles a record performance by a PAOK player in 90 minutes. Because Despodov was high up the pitch, he didn’t have many passes, but he had a very good scoring rate 26/32 precise passes.
The Bulgarian started perfectly at PAOK, but gradually experienced a slight decline as his role in Dikefalos is different to the one he had in Ludogorets. But now he shows that he is fully integrated, which is clear from both his appearances and his statements.
The summer addition of Despontov and the return of Murg gave Lucescu the opportunity to comfortably and successfully navigate the league and Conference League by splitting time and opening up the rotation. These two footballers were able to adequately fill the gap left by Živković and Tyson, who were missing in the last few games.
