Araούjo has been suffering from what happens to him every season for 7 years
AEK striker Sergio Araujo stays away from goal for crucial moments every season. The same thing happened to him this year.
It’s been a long time since AEK’s top scorer in the league, Argentina’s Sergio Araούjo, could find nets (on the inside) in a game this season. Specifically, on November 21 last year, when he scored both of his team’s goals in the home defeat (2:3) against Olympiakos. Since then he has taken part in 6 league games and one cup game without finding a goal.
However, this situation is not unprecedented for the Argentine forward, who is not the classic “killer” of the quarter, but an all-round striker who starts from the top but moves in all areas of the batting line, helping with either direct passes or creating space open to his teammates.
This fact is evidenced by the numerical presentation of his past productive deeds. Gives an assist per 7 games, a figure very satisfactory for a hunter, while on the contrary, he scores a goal every 3.5 games, a scoring index not so developed. In short, he has scored 91 goals and provided 46 assists in 326 official games of his career.
Instability is… a consequence of every season
The problem isn’t so much that Araούjo is a striker who scores an average of 7.5 goals per season in his 12 years (meaning a lot of participation) as a professional, but the long periods of not scoring. .
This is a period that repeats what characterizes his entire career in football. Perhaps the main reason is that while he was very talented, he didn’t have the development that many expected 7-8 years ago. And for the real reason, here’s what’s been recorded over the last few years:
Season 2015/16, Las Palmas: stayed from 13.9. until 6.11. and then from 30.12. until 11.4. empty.
Season 2016-17, Las Palmas: has from 24.9. until 28.11. didn’t score and didn’t play again due to knee problems. He joined AEK mid-year.
Season 2017-18, AEK: already in the championship year he had clear gaps. From 10/9 to 27/10 he didn’t score and then scored just one goal in 3.5 months (from 14/1 to 1/4).
Season 2018-19, Las Palmas: After returning to Spain and with a huge contract, he stayed from 16.12. until 19.5. empty. He hasn’t scored in 13 games while losing another 6 through injury.
Season 2019/20, AEK: met on 28.6. against Olympiakos and then remained empty in the next 6 games until the end of the playoffs, while he had scored only one goal in the previous 9 games for the league and cup.
Season 2020-21, Las Palmas: Although he generally had a good year with 11 goals, there was a period of months, from 10/1 to 4/1, when he didn’t score in 9 games.
Season 2021-22: As mentioned above, he scored the last two goals on 11/21. against Olympiakos as he has been ‘silent’ for seven games since then.
