A step ahead of Craiova, Varela was found by PAOK, open to Steaua
According to Craiova University folks, PAOK gave the green light for Varelas’ departure from Toumba but his transfer was damaged at the last minute but Steaua also got involved in the game to take him on.
University of Craiova strongman Mihai Rotaru revealed in statements that his team came close to taking on Fernando Varela from PAOK but ultimately failed to sign the veteran defender:
“We tried to get Fernando Varela from PAOK but we didn’t succeed. We’ve been working on his case for about two weeks, but the negotiations broke down today. PAOK had agreed as he is at odds with the player but unfortunately we were not able to complete his transfer. the reasons were economic” said Rotaru.
The prospect of Varela’s return to Romania bore no fruit, although Laurentiou Regekampf, with whom he had worked in Steaua, works in Craiova.
However, the fact that PAOK gave the green light to his departure from Toumba, according to the Romanians, shows that he would have no problem terminating Varelas’ contract 6 months before it expired and it is not excluded that he will move to another team. from Romania and in particular Steaua.
