Corberan: “Let’s send a message with our performance, not with our words”
Carlos Corberan spoke to COSMOTE TV about Sunday’s (21/8) game against PAS Ioannina, noting that his team should send a message with their performance on the field and not with words.
Olympiacos hosts PAS Ioannina (21 August, 10 p.m., COSMOTE SPORT 1 HD and live from Sportish) on Matchday 1 of the Super League, with Carlos Corberan giving an interview to the COSMOTE TV camera before the premiere.
The Spaniard spoke about his decision to join Olympiacos, he spoke about the philosophy he wants to pass on and whether he can get through the back-to-back games. He also referred to the demanding audience of the “Red-Whites” and also to the fact that his team will be the only ones to play from Thursday to Sunday.
His first thought when he found out about Olympiako’s interest:
“Ever since I was little, every footballer knew that Olympiakos is an important European team. I was a kid and I saw Olympiakos play big teams in Europe and beat them a lot.
I usually remember the games against Manchester United where Olympiacos were just a breath away from qualifying and I was impressed by their performance. Because of that and when I found out about Olympiakos’ interest, the first thing I felt was an honor that such a club asked me to trust me and at the same time I felt responsible because I knew that this is a very demanding club .”
To the fact that he’s asked to relay his philosophy to the team in the middle of back-to-back games:
“The development of our games obviously depends on the work we do before each game. The fact that we had to play important games straight away helped us to get a picture of our game, take care of it and implement it as quickly as possible. It happens because we had to be as ready as possible to achieve our goal . As a person and as a coach, I prefer to focus on solutions rather than problems.”
Regarding the fact that Olympiacos will be the only Greek team to compete from Thursday to Sunday:
“It is nothing new for Greek football that not many teams are represented in European competitions and it is very important for a country to have teams playing in Europe. Of course, as Olympiacos, we want to play at the highest level in European competitions.”
For the discerning public of Olympiakos:
“It’s always positive to have people who are as demanding as the club itself. I think in such demanding conditions you have to be good in every part of the game. There may be times when you win without playing well, but the best way to win is to play good football. Our goal is to win and our world to be proud of the spectacle we are putting on.”
For PAS Ioannina:
“I expect that we will face a very well organized team, playing 4-3-3, with a clear style of play. Without a doubt, the game against PAS Ioannina will be tough, but against any opponent I’m primarily interested in our team. To be good in all areas so that we can overcome any difficulties that come our way.
About Huang:
“Of course, Huang was impressive in Cyprus, but as he left this game with some muscle problems and it’s new, after the last training session we will know who is available and who isn’t. If you don’t play against PAS, it’s not because we’re “saving” him for Thursday, it’s because he won’t be 100% ready to play on Sunday.”
Whether he wants to send a message to the world ahead of the new season:
“I think a team sends messages to its world with its performance on the pitch and not with words. That’s why we want to show the world from tomorrow’s game that we have the will, the desire and the goal to play football that makes them proud of their team.”
