KED: ‘The referees of Athens Kallithea – Olympiacos B’ apologized and were penalized’

KED issued a statement noting that the referees of the Athens Kallithea – Olympiacos B’ match took full responsibility for their mistakes and apologized and that the committee will punish them and provide them with additional training.

Athens Kallithea’s game against Olympiakos B’ in “El Paso” was never completed as the red and white team was eliminated at half-time in protest at the refereeing decisions. In fact, Vangelis Marinakis was also on the field shortly after, staying for a few more minutes before leaving.


KED issued a statement acknowledging that a mistake was made in the stage of Athens Kallithea’s own goal due to the hand of the Piraeus footballer.


The referees acknowledged their mistake, took full responsibility for their mistakes and apologized. KED will punish them for their actions, take appropriate internal disciplinary action, and provide them with additional education and training.

After reviewing the footage of the game, it is clear that the referees made a clear and obvious mistake and without VAR the decision could not have been changed. The assistant referee saw an image that he interpreted as a handball offence. The referees take full responsibility for their actions and apologize for their mistake.

As a result, KED has already penalized the match officials and will take appropriate internal disciplinary action against them.

KED will also provide additional training and education to ensure the level of proficiency meets the requirements and standards expected of all judges of that level“.
