Veteran coach Alekos Vosniadis has taken over the fortunes of Athens’ Kallithea to lead them into the new Super League 2 season with the aim of returning to the top flight.

“Athens Kallithea FC is delighted to announce that Alekos Vosniadis has taken over as first-team coach.

Bosniadis, 62, has managed three promotions to Super League 1 with Apollon Smyrnis, Niki Volos and Corfu. Most recently, in the 2022/23 season, he temporarily took over the technical direction of Apollon Smyrna and contributed to the team’s third place finish in the league.

The Thessaloniki-born Bosniadis spent three years at local third division side Anagennisi Epanomi early in his coaching career and guided Epanomi to promotion in the 2010/11 season, returning the club to the second division after a 29-year absence.

From Epanomi, Bosniadis made the switch to Apollon Smyrnis with immediate success, earning promotion to Super League 1 in the 2012/13 season. The following season, Bosniadis picked up six points in their first seven Super League 1 games – enough to get out of the relegation zone to get out – before the club decided on a leadership change and the side were later relegated back to the second division.

In January 2014, Bosniadis took over mid-season management from Niki Volos and guided her to a second-place finish and promotion to Super League 1, returning the club to the top flight for the first time in 48 years.

Bosniadis returned to Apollon midway through the 2014–15 season. The team struggled in the second division and was close to promotion. She also reached the semi-finals of the Greek Cup before being eliminated by Olympiakos.

In the 2015/16 season, Bosniadis achieved the third promotion of his career to the top flight, this time with the Corfu club, where he finished second in the table, overtaking Apollon, his previous team. He later returned to the club in the middle of the 2017/18 season in Super League 1, collecting 15 points in 16 league games.

In the last five seasons from 2018/19 to 2022/23, Bosniadis has worked in the second division with Chania, Niki Volos and Apollon, recording 52 wins and 33 draws in 116 league games, which is 1.63 points per game.

Last season, Apollon forced Bosniadis Kifisia, the team that won promotion, to one of their two losses during the season.

Alekos Vosniadis is the father of AKFC goalkeeper Panos Vosniadis.

You’re welcome, Alec.
