Boycott of French cities at the World Cup, big screens will not be installed to show matches
Cities in France, including Lille and Rennes, have decided to boycott the 2022 World Cup due to Qatar’s human rights abuses by not showing matches from the tournament on big screens.
We are getting closer and closer to the 2022 World Cup, which starts on November 20th and ends on December 18th. At the same time, however, reactions against the host country are increasing.
Qatar has been accused of trampling and violating human and labor rights, with workers dead in the tens of thousands.
In protest, cities in France, including Lille and Rennes, decided to boycott the event by not installing giant screens in public spaces.
“Holding the World Cup in Qatar is nonsense in terms of human rights, environment and sport,” said Lille Mayor Martine Aubry.
“If you really love football, you cannot love the World Cup in Qatar. We will not put up a giant screen, nor will we illuminate our city with the colors of an event that we do not support,” added Deputy Mayor Arnaud Deland.
