Lineker urges gay players to come out during World Cup in Qatar
Former Barcelona and England striker Gary Lineker He stated that he personally knew two gay players playing in the Premier League. He urged them to participate in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar:
– It would be great if one or two of them came out at the same time during the World Cup. It would be great. I know for sure that some people are getting very close to showing up and thinking about it. There are a few players I know, but of course it’s not my place to say who they are.
Why are the players still not coming out?
– Fear. Fear of the unknown, I guess. They’re probably worried about what their teammates might think, although they probably already know. It seems crazy that such a situation even exists.
Nasser Al-Khater, head of the 2022 World Cup organizing committee, said in a statement in Qatar that it would be possible for gays to hold hands and for LGBTs to show rainbow flags.
However, Nasser said rainbow armbands on the shoulders of captains of England and several other teams are covered by FIFA, but he does not believe the World Cup is a place for political statements (armbands symbolize the fight against discrimination).
Earlier, the head coach of the German national team Hans-Dieter Flick talked about the fact that the World Cup will be held in Qatar.
