“The country’s cruelty and aggression towards its own people has reached a critical point that requires a firm and strict separation from the world of football and sports,” the Iranians wrote in a letter addressed to FIFA. Iranian fans applied to FIFA with a similar request.

A wave of protests swept the country after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who died after being detained by the Iranian police for wearing the hijab incorrectly. The Iranian footballers’ letter also stated that women are “systematically excluded from the football ecosystem in Iran”.

The World Cup will be held in Qatar from 20 November to 18 December. The Ukrainian national team failed to qualify for the World Cup, losing to Wales (0:1) in the decisive match of the playoff round. Interestingly, Wales and Iran are in the same group for the 2022 World Cup.
