Ecuador’s participation in the World Cup in Qatar was confirmed by CAS, despite appeals from Chile and Peru over Byron Castillo’s illegal participation in qualifiers.

Normally, and with the CAS stamp, Ecuador will take part in the World Cup in Qatar, with the Arbitration Court for Sport announcing its decision in the Byron Castillo case.

FIFA had dismissed the objections of the national team of Chile and the national team of Peru, who called for Ecuador’s exclusion from the 2022 World Cup, on the grounds that they had used Castillo, who was ineligible for the qualifying tournament. However, the case was referred to the Arbitration Court of Sport.

The CAS finally decided on Ecuador’s participation in Qatar and shared its rationale. In particular, the sports court recognized that the player had given false information on the place and date of birth in the passport (it is alleged that he was born in Colombia).

However, he also concedes that he had the right to compete in the national team jersey as he held a genuine Ecuadorian passport. Therefore, the Ecuadorian FA was penalized with a fine and -3 from the next qualifiers.
