Fernandes on the World Cup: “We know about the people who died to build the stadiums”

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has spoken out unequivocally against the World Cup in Qatar, citing the deaths of too many workers involved in building stadiums in the country.

Manchester United clinched a terrific 2-1 away win over Fulham with young Garnazzo as the savior, but the end of the game saw not only celebrations but also thought-provoking statements.

These were created by Bruno Fernandes, with the Portuguese midfielder making it clear that he did not like FIFA’s decision to host the World Cup in Qatar due to the incidents that culminated in the deaths of workers involved in the construction of the stadiums.

“It’s strange that the World Cup starts in the new week. It’s not exactly the time when we want to play the World Cup. Not only for us, but also for the fans it’s not the best time.

The kids will be in school, people will be working and it won’t be good for people to watch the games.” Fernandez said first to add meaningfully:

“We know what has been done all along that people have lost their lives building stadiums. We’re not happy about that at all.

We want football to be for everyone, everyone should take part, because the World Cup is the world. It’s for everyone. The World Cup isn’t just football, it’s a party for the fans and for the players and it should have been done better.”

Anatoly TRUBIN: “Rebrov decided to sacrifice him”

Goalkeeper of the Ukrainian national team Anatoly Trubin I remembered the match against France (0:4) when Sergei Rebrov released the semi-reserve squad.

“It was the coach’s choice. It is always the coach who decides whether the match will be sacrificed or not. If we talk about the challenge itself, we all understand the strength of France. I understood that there could be a lot of shots, there could be a lot of chances, and I was ready for it. When the opponent is always with the ball, constantly attacking, you are always in the game: you play in sections, you react, you constantly feel the rhythm.

For me personally, it’s even easier than when your team is attacking most of the time and you’re standing idle and suddenly there’s a moment where you have to be ready,” Trubin said.

INFANTINO: “If there was no FIFA, there would be no football in 150 countries of the world”

FIFA President Gianni Infantino He commented on World Cup ticket prices, saying they reflected “absolutely insane” demand for next summer’s tournament:

“We have six to seven million tickets and in 15 days we received 150 million ticket requests. So every day we have 10 million requests. This shows how strong the World Cup is.”

FIFA has sold just 44 million tickets in almost 100 years of the World Cup. So we were able to sell tickets for the 300th anniversary of the World Cup in two weeks. Just imagine. “This is absolutely crazy.”

Infantino also noted that funds from ticket sales would be reinvested into world football, but did not specify a specific amount:

“The important thing is that the revenue from this goes back into football around the world. If it weren’t for FIFA, there would be no football in 150 countries of the world. Football exists thanks to the revenues we get from the World Cup, and we reinvest that into football around the world.”

Previously, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called on FIFA to further reduce 2026 World Cup ticket prices.
