World Cup 2022, ERT: “Completely unfair criticism that we let private broadcasters take over the event”
ERT has issued a statement regarding its claim for the television rights to the 2022 World Cup in response to criticism it is receiving for losing the tournament.
ERT has updated the public on the bidding process for the 2022 World Cup television rights in response to criticism of losing them for the first time in history.
Public TV executives argue that the change in the way the tender was conducted resulted in the loss of rights despite the largest bid ever made by ERT.
The TV rights went to the group ANT1, which was the first private broadcaster in Greece to broadcast the top soccer match.

With ERT receiving totally unfair criticism for allegedly letting commercial broadcasters take over the World Cup, the truth must be known.
ERT provided the largest amount ever provided by public television in the relevant tender in May 2021 to acquire all rights to the World Cup in Qatar and broadcast all matches freely on its three channels, as has always been the case. But for the first time, FIFA suddenly decided on an alternative competition in Greece, in which subscription platforms could also participate, so they bore the total costs with the private broadcasters and for the first time excluded all TV viewers from free access to some games.
To make it even clearer that no one has forced ERT to withdraw from major sporting events, in the next major football event competition, public television has claimed the rights to both Euro 2024 and Euro 2028, their matches and already secured – of course – will be broadcast freely”.

INFANTINO: “If there was no FIFA, there would be no football in 150 countries of the world”
FIFA President Gianni Infantino He commented on World Cup ticket prices, saying they reflected “absolutely insane” demand for next summer’s tournament:
“We have six to seven million tickets and in 15 days we received 150 million ticket requests. So every day we have 10 million requests. This shows how strong the World Cup is.”
FIFA has sold just 44 million tickets in almost 100 years of the World Cup. So we were able to sell tickets for the 300th anniversary of the World Cup in two weeks. Just imagine. “This is absolutely crazy.”
Infantino also noted that funds from ticket sales would be reinvested into world football, but did not specify a specific amount:
“The important thing is that the revenue from this goes back into football around the world. If it weren’t for FIFA, there would be no football in 150 countries of the world. Football exists thanks to the revenues we get from the World Cup, and we reinvest that into football around the world.”
Previously, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called on FIFA to further reduce 2026 World Cup ticket prices.
