Valbuena on Deschamps: “After his speech in the dressing room, I went out and wanted to destroy everything”
Mathieu Valbuena doused Didier Deschamps with honey in an interview with ‘RMC’, recalling his fiery speech in the France dressing room 9 years ago that inspired the players to qualify for the World Cup in Brazil.
Didier Deschamps has spent 10 years on the bench of the France national team and in that time… managed to win a World Cup (2018) and take part in a European Championship final (2016) while missing a game (this one against Morocco in the semifinals) to to reach a World Cup final for the second time in a row.
What is his secret of success? According to Mathieu Valbuena, what makes the former Blues captain so successful is the contagion he brings to his players. The Olympiakos midfielder gave an interview to “RMC” and shed light on an unknown scene 9 years ago.
It was 2013 when France, with their backs to the wall after a 2-0 defeat by Ukraine, needed a turnaround en route to the World Cup in Brazil. Valbuena reported that those words Deschamps said to his players in the dressing room were crucial to the win, great reversal and the 3-0.
“I came out of the dressing room and I was like an animal, I wanted to destroy everything. With what he said, he gave strength and determination to the whole team.
He always knew how to get through it in his groups. In his conversations he will talk a little about tactics, but he will not stay on topic for long, he will mainly talk about families and people.
He will share with us his experiences as a player and as a coach. It makes you cringe. You come out of this conversation and you say to yourself… wow.” Valbuena said among other things.
