Rafael Nadal and Lionel Messi have great admiration for each other and the tennis legend has expressed his excitement at Argentina’s success at the recent World Cup in Qatar.

Nadal admitted he burst into tears as Lionel Messi inspired Argentina to the world title.

“Without supporting Argentina, I burst into tears when Messi scored the third goal of the final. It was a huge thrill to see someone so great achieve what he lacked after suffering so much for itsaid Rafael Nadal, who knows better than anyone the sacrifices that have to be made at the highest level of sport for years.

It remains to be seen how long we will be lucky enough to see Nadal and Messi in their respective sports, with the 36-year-old Spaniard putting himself at risk.

“Sports fans don’t like it when someone they admire retires. They don’t want Messi or Tiger (Woods) to retire. I also like to watch them on TV and I want to continue to see them.” said Rafa characteristically.

With 22 Grand Slams under his belt, Nadal will start the new year in Australia, taking part in the United Cup with the Spanish national team before settling in Melbourne to defend his Australian Open title.
