Thanasis Stavrakis, what were your thoughts when you took the most viral photo of the World Cup?
Oneman.gr spoke to Greek photojournalist Thanasis Stavrakis, who was at the stadiums in Qatar and managed to capture some of the most stunning footage of the event.
The referee blows his whistle to end extra time. Argentina and the Netherlands will battle it out in a grueling penalty shootout for a place in the semi-finals of the World Cup. One of the people watching the game live in Qatar is Thanasis Stavrakis. Only he is not there to enjoy the game, but to take pictures for the international agency Associated Press.
The process begins. The Dutch missed the first penalty. You also lose the second. The Argentines are one step away from qualifying. Lautaro Martinez puts the ball on from eleven meters, deceives in the penultimate step and hits the goal. And while most would think Argentina internationals would hug their compatriot, they begin to celebrate in front of the Dutch, who have fallen to their knees.

TRUBIN: “The goal is the World Championship. Not just getting into the group, but getting out of the group.”
Goalkeeper of Benfica and the Ukrainian national team Anatoly Trubin He talked about the duties of the national team in 2026 as follows:
“World Cup rivals? To be honest, it’s hard to talk about it right now. I know the match with Sweden for sure, but I still can’t quite understand what kind of rivals we are talking about. Yes, they are talking about Albania and Poland, these are serious teams. But right now we have to go through Sweden first.”
Now everyone is in club football, everyone has their own duties, their own focus. Concentrate on the club for now. Everyone remembers how this could have ended.
Of course, the World Championship is a very important and big goal. The last time the Ukrainian national team played there was in 2006, so it would definitely be very, very nice for us. But don’t just go out, make yourself look good, try to stand out from the group.
Therefore, the first task is to participate in the World Championship. I think this is a goal and a dream not only for the players, but also for all the fans and all Ukrainians. “When the national team plays, everyone watches football, even those who don’t follow it much.”
