WM workers jailed in Qatar for back wages
The Guardian revealed three security guards who worked at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar have been detained by authorities for claiming unpaid wages.
About five months have passed since the World Cup in Qatar, a World Cup that caused debate for many reasons and was heavily criticized for the working conditions and the deaths of thousands of workers.
It reappears some time after the 2022 World Cup. According to the Guardian, three men who worked in the organisation, particularly in the security department, have been arrested and remain in custody four months after their arrest.
They are two men from Pakistan and an Indian national who, after the early termination of their contracts, are demanding wages owed to them and their colleagues.
The Qatari authorities sentenced to six months in prison and a fine of 2,500 euros each.
At the same time, other workers were deported from the country. With three months left on her contracts, they canceled her contract and asked her to claim her last salary, which was valid until December, and then vacate her accommodation.
Somehow, a few days later, they suddenly found themselves unemployed and homeless. “When they needed you they treated you well but now they’re done with you, you’re nothing to them,” one of the security guards said, while another added: “They say it was the best World Cup, but in the end we lost everything.”
After trying to resist the early termination of their contracts, the two men were reportedly detained and then deported along with hundreds of others.
