Messi: “I think I played at my last World Cup”
Lionel Messi has confirmed he won’t play in his new team’s country at the next World Cup despite leaving a slit open.
Lionel Messi’s move to Inter Miami has fueled rumors he could play at the next World Cup, which will be co-hosted by USA, Canada and Mexico in 2026.
The Argentinian superstar will be 39 this summer and will be in peak competitive form if still active, but he has long stated that Qatar was his last appearance at this level.
“Like I said, I don’t think so. What I won was my last world championship. We’ll see how things develop in the future, but nothing has changed in my opinion. I would like to see it, but not participate”, He told China TV from Beijing where he is for Argentina’s friendlies against Australia and Indonesia (he won’t play in the latter).
“Having gained what I’ve been lacking, I’m content and grateful for the career I’ve had. And that’s the most important thing for me. I think I played at my last World Cup.”
