Infantino did not rule out that the Russian national team could play in the 2026 World Cup
FIFA President Gianni Infantino Did not exclude the possibility of the Russian national team participating in the next tournament world championship 2026 in football.
Asked about the possibility of the Russian team qualifying for the tournament, Infantino replied on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York: “We’ll see.”
In February 2022, UEFA and FIFA suspended the participation of Russian clubs and national teams in tournaments due to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin stated that Russian teams would not be able to return to international tournaments until the end of the war.
FIFA had previously changed the format of the 2026 World Cup to be held in the USA, Mexico and Canada. 48 teams will be divided into 12 groups of 4 teams. The teams that take first or second place in the groups and the best 8 teams that take third place will advance to the 1/16 finals.
