Saudi Arabia will host the 2034 World Cup in a surprise move after being considered the sole candidate for the tournament, FIFA announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Saudi Arabia will surprise host the 2034 World Cup, FIFA confirmed on Tuesday afternoon.

The application deadline was October 31 and with Australia withdrawing interest, the Saudi dossier is the only solution for the tournament.

The Arabs tried to claim the 2030 event as well and held talks about a joint candidacy with Greece and Egypt, but the event could no longer take place in Asia as the 2022 event was held in Qatar.

As such, they put in a dossier themselves and are “racing” against themselves to win this top honor at a time when their money has flooded club football.

The deadline for the 2030 World Cup files, whose fate has already been announced, officially expired on the same day.

The upcoming tournament will be held jointly in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, but due to the anniversary nature Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay will host a match of their national teams.

FIFA announced the end of the first phase of the process to take over the two competitions, namely the submission of nominations. The files will then be examined by the FIFA administration and the Confederation Congress’ decision on the award is expected in the last quarter of 2024.
