Infantino for workers in Qatar: “6,000 could have died doing other jobs, FIFA is not a police force”
Gianni Infantino was asked about the miserable conditions at the World Cup in Qatar, to which the Fifa President replied that the world association was not a police force.
The countdown to the start of the World Cup has started and FIFA announces the detailed program of the event, which will take place in Qatar on November 27th.
However, there are reports of blatant violations of human rights and labor rights on World Cup construction sites. More specifically, the Guardian has revealed how At least 6,500 migrant worker deaths have been reported since 2010.
Infantino was asked about the Qatari migrant workers, to which he replied that this gave them dignity and pride: “Let’s not forget one thing as we talk about this subject that affects work, even hard, hard work.
America is an immigration country. My parents also immigrated to Switzerland from Italy. When you give someone a job, even under difficult circumstances, you give them dignity and pride. It’s not charity“.
The FIFA President’s response to the question about the 6,500 deaths was cynical: “6,000 could also have died in other occupations. FIFA is not the world police or responsible for what happens in the world“.
