Wales – Ukraine. Prediction and announcement for the 2022 World Cup play-off match

On June 5, the national team of Ukraine will have to play another “match of life”. In the 2022 World Cup play-off final, Oleksandr Petrakov’s men will play against Wales at Cardiff City Stadium. This fight will determine the final European finalist of the 2022 World Cup.

Wales

The Dragons played the semi-final playoff match against the Austrian national team at the end of March (on the 24th). And they won 2:1. Since then, Rob Page’s wards have been waiting for the winner of the match between Scotland and Ukraine to meet him in the final.

After the match against the Austrians, the Wales team had only two official matches. The first – in March – with the Czech national team. In the friendly match in Cardiff, the opponents drew 1:1.

But the British now played the last duel quite recently – on the first day of summer. In the starting round of the Nations League, the Wales team remained in Poland. And lost 1:2 in a tough match. The guests were the first to score, but in the second half of the meeting the hosts managed to turn the tide of the game and the winning goal was scored five minutes before the end of regular time.

Page deliberately did not bet against the “squads” of their leader, considering the duel against the Ukrainian team. Still, the head coach of the Wales team liked the game with the Poles. According to him, the draw should have been a fair result of the match.

Briefly about Wales’ path to the 2022 World Cup playoffs. The British played in the “Belgium” E group, where they took second place. The Red Devils were out of competition there. But in the second place Wales fought with the Czech Republic. And in the end, he won the war. Page’s team has four wins, three draws and only one defeat (against the Belgians) in the election. Interestingly, in this tournament, the “dragons” could not hit someone else’s goal only once – in the game against the Estonian national team (0:0).

The Welsh national team’s game is still determined by its captain and leader, Gareth Bale. It was he who was the author of a double against the Austrian national team that predetermined Wales’ entry into the playoff final. But the former Real Madrid midfielder is far from being “the same” anymore. At the club level, Gareth has actually been “off the game” for the past two seasons: injury, blues, golf. In the recently completed championship of Spain, Bale played only once in the heart of the “royal club”.

Actually, Bale in Madrid and the Welsh national team are two different people. The best scorer in the history of the “dragons” in his national team is well transformed, but his condition still leaves much to be desired.

This may appeal to another leader of the Wales team – Ramsey. The midfielder lost his spot at Juventus last season and was loaned to Glasgow Rangers. But even there he played very little – only five matches.

The two main goalkeepers of the Wales national team, Hennessy and Ward, also do not have enough playing practice.

The rest of the Page team can boast enough playing time in this regard, but they’re mostly in the lower English leagues here.

So in terms of play and individual indicators, the Welsh team is about the same level as the Scottish team. Also, the team is quite old. Strong vertical football, side attacks and bets on next crosses and crosses, and of course Gareth Bale, his goal-scoring instinct and excellent set pieces. With a crowded home stadium, Wales will definitely get a second wind. However, it is not appropriate to call this team “impassable” now.

robber page, Wales head coach

– The most important game we will play on Sunday. Therefore, I did not jeopardize my best players and did not release them in the first round of the League of Nations in the match against Poland. We saved Bale, Ramsey and Allen’s forces. Let’s see what happens on 5 June but this is really the most important game for Wales.

Ukraine

The day after the victorious match against Scotland, the delegation of the Ukrainian team went to Cardiff. There, at Cardiff City’s training base, Petrakov’s wards were preparing for the decisive battle against Wales.

The teaching staff of the “Blue-Yellows” dosed the theoretical lessons with practical lessons. And work out in the gym.

Already in Cardiff, another rookie joined the team – Bordeaux midfielder Danilo Ignatenko. Such a late “participation” is simply explained: I waited a long time for a British visa.

Oleksandr Zinchenko, who hasn’t had this much trouble with a teammate for a long time, described the game with Dragons as follows: “Each of us should play our best match of our life.”

And this is true given both the continued reckless aggression in Ukraine and the fatigue after the game in Glasgow. Regardless of what anyone says after our victory over Scotland, we have to admit that this match took a lot of energy from our players. And not only physically, but also emotionally, which is very important.

For this reason, our coaching staff must first of all restore the players and bring them back to the same “denominator”.

An interesting question about how the Blue-Yellows played in Cardiff City. Is our team ready to play the “first point” again, or will they still counterattack? It seems that the Ukrainians will try to “start” again in the first half of the game, when they are fresh and have enough strength. We’ll see how Petrakov decides.

It’s about our startup protocol. The winning roster does not change – this rule is likely to be demanded in our case as well.

Alexander Petrakov, Head coach of the Ukrainian national team:

– We took a small step and reached the final. There is also a game with Wales. We will do everything possible. We are proud that we are Ukrainians, we glorify Ukraine in this difficult time. Thank you Glasgow! I went to Wales.

Personal meetings

The upcoming match for the opponents will be the fourth head-to-head match. Ukrainians and Welshmen met for the first time on the football field during the 2002 World Cup elections. Both meetings ended the same way – 1:1 draw. The next match between the teams had to wait a long time: 15 years. In a friendly match in 2016, the Ukrainians were stronger than 1:0.

guess

It was not in vain that Page deliberately “scored a goal” in the League of Nations’ first-round game against Poland. The Wales head coach does not hide the fact that at this stage the match against the Ukrainian national team was the main match. To say the least, the “dragons” haven’t played in the final stages of the World Cup since 1958. Therefore, there is no doubt that Bale and company will do everything in their power to qualify for the World Cup.

By contrast, there is no doubt that our players and coaches think and act alike. Zinchenko’s explanatory words are quoted above. On the home side – the support and motivation of the stadium, but the same can be said in our favor, because the entire away sector in the arena will be filled with our fans.

Most likely the match in Cardiff will not be as bright as in Glasgow. It could be a “chess game”. So the outcome of the match will be determined by a single ball. We guess that the player of the Ukrainian national team will become its author.
