The decisive battle is lost. Ukraine national team lost to Wales and will not qualify for the World Cup
The people of Ukraine, who have suffered for a long time, but no less proud and stubborn, are now experiencing a new round of aggression against our country. Someone says that it is inappropriate to talk about football at such a difficult time, but the victory match of the Ukrainian national football team in the qualifying match against Scotland (3:1) proved otherwise.
Thanks to this success of the Blue-Yellows, we have not only added some endorphins to our daily diet of emotion, but Alexander Petrakov’s team also had the opportunity to play in the decisive match against Wales in Cardiff. They will represent their country at the World Cup in Qatar. The hospitable Cardiff City stadium, like all of Great Britain, happily welcomed the Ukrainian team, but we came for a certain result – to win, so there was no need to seek compromises.
And Ukraine got off to a really strong start, with a third-minute rebound from a defender and a heavy downpour prevented goalkeeper Hennessy from tackling Oleksandr Zinchenko’s long-range free kick in midfield. It is a pity that our players rushed to play the standard position without waiting for the referee’s permission, which is why the hit shot was cancelled. However, this did not prevent Petrakov’s team from putting more pressure on the opposing half and gave reasons for the opposing goalkeeper to enter the fight.
In contrast to the coldness towards Scotland, the moments at the gates of the representatives of the British Isles cost a dime a dozen. All that remains is that the “blue-yellows” faced such serious difficulties that they could only hold their heads each time Hennessy once again emerged from “dry” situations.
Yaremchuk, Tsygankov and Zinchenko took turns destroying the Welsh defenses with wide and fast attacks, but a single left-wing counterattack from James in the 34th minute had serious consequences for us. Ruslan Malinovsky knocked out his opponent on the outskirts of the penalty area, after which Andriy Yarmolenko unsuccessfully put his head under the surrender of Gareth Bale, which by the standard was not so difficult.
Given the actions of Petrakov’s team, we expected to see no such result in the first half, but nothing against the situation on the scoreboard. But regarding some of the decisions of the Spanish referee in Laos – this is welcome! A blatant penalty was somehow not seen by the VAR team after Allen accidentally fouled into Yarmolenko from the left flank of the free kick while attempting to kick the ball far away shortly before the break, which caused controversy. Fans during a short pause.
The second half of the match was quite predictable in terms of Wales’ defensive playing behaviour, but this was from the moment the hosts started things up. Ramsey forgave our team by failing to make the left wing cross from outside the penalty area. At times, the Red Dragons have had opportunities to harass Buschan, but the game is almost entirely controlled by Ukraine.
It was useless to talk about the opportunities in the Hennessy goal, as they had to be scored. But the opponents’ goalkeeper was as confident as possible in his own abilities, so even the fatal situations of Yarmolenko and Dovbik only resulted in our disappointment. And then the opponents were able to suddenly counterattack and jump the post with a finishing kick, just as Neko Williams did at the 75th minute, after which Buschan gave some more hope for success with a magical reflection from Bale at close range. But in the end, there was no surprising rescue – Petrakov’s team fought to the end, but luck was not on his side.
The final whistle of Spanish referee Antonio Miguel Mateu Laos passed the Wales team to the World Cup in Qatar. For the national team of Ukraine there was a stop, one step away from a dream.

Secrets of the Real Madrid dressing room: Kroos told how he got along with Vinicius
Former Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos He talked about his interaction with Brazilian striker Vinicius Junior and other representatives of Brazil within the scope of the “royal club”.
“The Brazilians aroused my sympathy even as a child. While playing for Real Madrid, I developed excellent relationships with Vinicius, Casemiro and Militao.
It is very easy to find a common language with these guys: they know how to enjoy life, and their mentality is significantly different from that of the Germans.
Casemiro and Vinicius and I understood each other perfectly on the field and developed a unique football bond with Vini.
We communicated warmly in daily life. I believe that if there is no contact between players off the field, it is extremely difficult to achieve harmony in the game.
I used Vini’s high-speed bursts effectively and he masterfully directed my passes,” AS Kroos reports.
Let’s remember that Kroos defended the jersey of Real Madrid from 2014 to 2024. During this decade the German midfielder won the Champions League five times.

Did you name Germany? Kroos surprised by choice of World Cup favorite
Former star of Real Madrid and the German national team Toni Kroos He determined the favorites of the World Cup and evaluated the chances of Brazil and Germany:
“World Cup? The main favorites are Spain, Portugal, France and Morocco. I’m not talking about Brazil, but it could happen. It’s good that a large number of teams are participating, but I am now against increasing the number of participants. We need to protect the players and the quality of the tournament. With more teams there will be obvious scores and these are not the kind of matches that fans want to see. Quality matches are important for me, not 5:0 or 6:0. Players come to the tournament tired and play more matches, the level drops a little.
Is Ancelotti in Brazil? He could have left a year ago, but he stayed at Real Madrid. I talked to him throughout the summer and wished him luck. He really wanted to coach Brazil, I hope everything goes well for him. Brazil has top-level players like Vini with valuable experience.
Neymar? The important thing is when it is 100%. He may experience a lack of rhythm in the game due to the injuries he has experienced in recent years. Now he’s injured again, he only has 6 months left. If he is fit he can help any team in the world.
Team Germany? I think Germany is always among the favorites, but not among the main ones. “I’m sure they will at least reach the quarter-finals or semi-finals, but the level is a little lower, although everything is possible in football,” he said.

Shevchenko made statements about the Ukraine-Sweden match in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers
UAF President Andrey Shevchenko He talked about the match against the Swedish national team in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
“When we were drawn against Sweden we probably faced our toughest opponent. I have great respect for Swedish football, you have always had good national teams and great players.”
“It’s always difficult to face Scandinavian teams, even though you don’t qualify for the World Cup, because you have so much quality, character and identity. This is similar to us to some extent. I don’t think there are favourites. In the end it all depends on the details, the injury situation and the preparations,” said Shevchenko.
In case of victory, Ukraine will play with the winner of the Poland-Albania doubles for a ticket to the World Cup. Ukraine will play the final match at home on March 31, again conditionally.
In addition to the 12 teams that finished second in their groups, the 4 winners of the Nations League quartet will also participate in the play-offs. All 16 participants are divided into 4 paths. Each route will include a semi-final and a final. The semi-finals will be held on March 26, and the finals will be held on March 31, 2026.
