The CEO of the Football Association of Wales said in statements to the BBC that members of the federation will boycott the World Cup in Qatar because of the state’s stance on the rights of the LGBTQ+ community.

The World Cup in Qatar provoked severe criticism from the world public for two reasons. On the one hand for the labor rights of the workers who worked on the construction sites to build the stadiums and facilities that will serve everyone who will attend the tournament, on the other hand for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community are frequently violated in Qatar.

Several teams came up with the idea of boycotting the tournament, with Norway and its players being the ones who showed the most “willingness” to act (if they qualified). The same action is expected to be taken by staff from the Wales national team, Football Association of Wales CEO Noel Mooney has told the BBC.

Mooney pointed out that the World Cup should be used as an opportunity to improve conditions in Qatar and that the boycott was the wrong choice, but the choice of those doing it, as well as the federation’s staff, was respected.

Some of my friends and some of the association’s staff will not be traveling to Qatar due to the country’s stance on LGBTQ+ community rights. They won’t go to the tournament, which is their right.

The vast majority of people will go and understand that our position is that the tournament is a platform that tries to improve life there and to have a dialogue about human rights issues, but also the rights of migrant workers.‘ said Noel Mooney, among others.
