Asia “earns” eight overall spots for the 2026 World Cup finals and one through an intercontinental playoff
The Asian Football Confederation has announced the changes for the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup and the 2027 Pan-Asia Cup: Eight teams qualify directly for the World Cup finals and one via intercontinental playoffs.

Asia will have eight direct tickets to the 2026 World Cup and qualify for another team via an intercontinental playoff. By the time of the World Cup in Qatar, four teams had qualified for the finals of the tournament and one via an intercontinental playoff.
It is recalled that the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the stadiums of Canada, Mexico and the United States, will be played with 48 teams and not 32 as before.
