Czech star David Krejci tested positive for COVID-19 upon his arrival in Beijing and missed the Czech men’s hockey team’s first practice.
Head coach Filip Pesan said Krejci was still at the athletes’ village awaiting the results of further COVID-19 tests. Pesan says he is optimistic about Krejci’s participation in Friday’s training as a similar situation happened with another player.
“He will take further tests tonight and tomorrow morning. I firmly believe he will join training tomorrow,” said Pesan.
The 35-year-old former Boston Bruins center is expected to be one of the tournament’s best players in the absence of the NHL players. Krejci won the Stanley Cup with Boston in 2011 and had 854 points in 1,118 regular season and playoff games.
Krejci averaged nearly a point per game last season with the Bruins. He left the NHL for the Czech Extraliga so friends and family could watch him play before he retired.
