After dominating Switzerland, the Canadians served the same medicine to Finland on Saturday in the women’s hockey tournament at the Beijing Olympics.

Canada’s representatives shifted into fifth gear starting in the second period to claim a convincing 11-1 victory.

The Canadians have now scored 23 goals in two games since the start of the competition, having beaten Switzerland 12-1 at the end of the Olympics.

Sarah Nurse and Brianne Jenner led the charge offensively in the win as they each recorded a hat trick. Jenner also added an assist to her tally. Not having found the back of the net since the start of the competition, Marie-Philip Poulin obtained three assists in front of the Finns. Laura Stacey and Sarah Fillier each flashed the red light twice.

Minnamari Tuominen was the only player to beat Ann-Renée Desbiens late in the first period. After 20 minutes of play, Canada was only leading 2-1 on the scoreboard. Five goals for Canada in the second period took the lead. The Canadian goaltender finished her game with 28 saves. Sixteen of the 19 Maple Leaf skaters earned at least one point.

The Canadians will play their next match Sunday night into Monday with a showdown against the Russian Olympic Committee athletes.

Daoust must wait

The team leaders announced before the meeting that Mélodie Daoust’s state of health will be reassessed daily.

One of the team’s most important players, Daoust suffered an upper-body injury during the game against Switzerland earlier this week.

The Canadian forward left the box in pain and appeared to be clutching her left shoulder.

“We anticipate that she will be able to return to the game at some point during the Olympic tournament,” said director of hockey operations Gina Kingsbury.

Daoust led Canada to a gold medal at the Women’s World Hockey Championship last summer in Calgary with six goals and six assists in seven games.
