The NFL Week 2 It was marked by some incredible comebacks from teams that were behind and big failures from top teams. There was also some regularity with the league’s top teams going about their business, some going 2-0 and others recovering from 1-1.
While it’s easy near the top to tell which teams continue to run away from the rest, confusion in the middle is starting to develop due to the early 1-1 mess. With all that in mind for week three, here they are NFL Power Rankings updated by The SportingNews.
NFL Week 3 Power Rankings
1. Buffalo Bills 2-0 (previous ranking: 1)
The Bills had plenty of time to rest after beating the Super Bowl champion Rams to open Week 1. They were well positioned to stop the Titans at home Monday night with their offense and defense.
2. Kansas City Chiefs 2-0 (2)
The Chiefs’ offense crumbled against the Chargers’ stout defense, but Patrick Mahomes and the defense made the big plays necessary to bring out the worst in Justin Herbert. Kansas City won’t give Buffalo a break before their epic playoff rematch in Week 6.
3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2-0 (3)
The Buccaneers under Todd Bowles lack an explosive offense so far, especially with significant injuries to the receivers and offensive line. But they get it done early on, dominating with a strong and active defense that is absolutely sound and intimidating at every level.
4Philadelphia Eagles 2-0 (6)
The Eagles have enjoyed a strong offensive start, led by Jalen Hurts and AJ Brown. They’re the clear favorites to run out of the NFC East, and supporting a few more things on defense means they’ll be a factor in the bigger playoff picture.
5. Los Angeles Rams 1-1 (8)
The Rams blew out the Falcons all over the field as they were okay overall, although there were some miscues in the passing game, pass defense and special teams. They should continue the momentum against the defensively poor Cardinals before the opener against the 49ers in Week 4.
6. San Francisco 49ers 1-1 (9)
Speaking of the 49ers, they took a big hit with the loss of Trey Lance just before he could get back on track for a potential great season. But the return of Jimmy Garoppolo is an incredible luxury to continue to capitalize on the massive overall talent under Kyle Shanahan. Nick Bosa and the defense will always keep them away from a real slump.
7. Los Angeles Chargers 1-1 (4)
The Chargers played their best to take down the Chiefs on Thursday night, but they made a critical mistake with Justin Herbert’s pick six. They had to get inspired with their defense, they just need to clean up their explosive offense for bigger games.
8. Miami Dolphins 2-0 (13)
Mike McDaniel has shown all his offensive genius in just two games with Tua Tagovailoa, Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill. It even had Chase Edmonds and Mike Gesicki in key projects. The Dolphins live up to playoff expectations on one hand, but they need to get a more consistent defense to live up to their postseason promise.
9. Minnesota Vikings 1-1 (7)
The Vikings match McDaniel’s early signing from Miami with Kevin O’Connell the way he describes Justin Jefferson and Dalvin Cook. However, the new defense with healthier personnel is why they can continue to push the Packers, who they already beat, in the NFC North race.
10. Green Bay Packers 1-1 (10)
The Packers are coming off another shaky Week 1 under Matt LaFleur, with Aaron Rodgers and the defense playing more than expected in the home game against the Bears. They need to make it all systems go a little more for Brady and the Buccaneers in Week 3.
11. Baltimore Ravens 1-1 (5)
What was that? The Ravens secondary and pass defense collapsed quickly in the fourth quarter against the Dolphins, losing to an epic pass and run performance from Lamar Jackson. They will look to bounce back in a much more limited Patriots offense.
12. Denver Broncos 1-1 (17)
The Broncos still don’t look very good on offense as Russell Wilson and Nathaniel Hackett single out their pass and run options. But his 3-4 defense has shown he can pack plenty of punch when needed with Randy Gregory and Bradley Chubb.
13. New York Giants 2-0 (20)
The Giants, like the Dolphins and Vikings, also made a good offensive hire in Brian Daboll, a smart coach who has experience with both Bill Belichick and Nick Saban. But the story of its early turnaround, aside from a rejuvenated Saquon Barkley, has been a run-based offense and a solid defense, even without Kayvon Thibodeaux and Azeez Ojulari.
14. Pittsburgh Steelers 1-1 (11)
Did Mitchell Trubisky do enough to remain the Steelers’ starting QB over rookie Kenny Pickett? He’s been shaky through two games, but the team is still in first place (with everyone else) in the AFC North and has a great chance against. the Browns on Thursday night. Pittsburgh may rely heavily on winning attrition battles with a defensive mindset and may need to trade for more offensive explosiveness in Week 4.
15. Dallas Cowboys 1-1 (18)
What was that? The Cowboys got another gutsy performance from Cooper Rush on a well-designed offense from Kellen Moore. Their defense, fueled of course by Micah Parsons, rose to the occasion to dismantle the Bengals. The goal will be to stay alive in the NFC East race behind the Eagles and now the Giants until Dak Prescott returns.
16. Cincinnati Bengals 0-2 (12)
Joe Barrow has returned to the human piñata with a high level of pressure and a sack. The Bengals are struggling to bring their passing game down the field and it is not complementary to their defensive effort. It will suddenly become more difficult, too, against better QBs after Week 3 at the Jets.
17. Arizona Cardinals 1-1 (21)
The Cardinals defense looked bad again for a good portion of the game against the Raiders. But they had to be glad that Kyler Murray took command of the offense in comeback mode when they needed him most.
18. New England Patriots 1-1 (23)
The Patriots don’t get many points to get the win in Pittsburgh with a healthy dose of the run and an active front seven defense. But it’s a reminder that Belichick and his coaching staff are capable of making some solid adjustments to win right when they count.
19. Cleveland Browns 1-1 (14)
The Browns offense was a pleasant surprise in the home opener against the Jets, with Nick Chubb setting up some nice passes from Jacoby Brissett. But the defense had a total meltdown against Joe Flacco at the end, and there was also erratic clock management by Kevin Stefanski. Cleveland is likely stuck playing a lot of close games without Deshaun Watson.
20. New Orleans Saints 1-1 (15)
The Saints offense was without Alvin Kamara for a wild offense and Jameis Winston ran into a tough pass defense from his former team, the Buccaneers. They need more consistency there to support Dennis Allen’s defense.
21. Detroit Lions 1-1 (27)
The Lions showed some of their own “Hard Knocks” comes out as an offensive and defensive team over Washington, thanks to young stars Amon-Ra St. Brown, D’Andre Swift and Aidan Hutchinson. Detroit’s talent and gusto will keep it in most games under Dan Campbell.
22. Tennessee Titans 0-2 (22)
The Titans lost a late game against the Giants and also missed a major opportunity to bounce back in Week 1. They remain winless after a brutal game vs. Buffalo, a team that in its current state is nowhere close to winning.
23. Chicago Bears 1-1 (19)
The Bears were fortunate to take down the mighty 49ers in the rain in Week 1, but in non-freezing conditions at Lambeau Field, their run defense got a reality check from the Packers. His game design in the passing game around Justin Fields is still uninspired.
24. Washington Commanders 1-1 (25)
The Chiefs defense is a complete mess of schemes and personnel, even more exposed without Chase Young. This diminishes a charged offense that looked much more dangerous under Carson Wentz.
25. Jacksonville Jaguars 1-1 (31)
The Jaguars also have a capable offense again with Doug Pederson and Tipo Taylor helping Trevor Lawrence shine with Christian Kirk, James Robinson, Travis Etienne and others. What should excite them most is that their defense, loaded with youth, shut out Jonathan Taylor and the Colts.
26. Las Vegas Raiders 0-2 (24)
The Raiders defense clearly had issues and the offensive line was problematic. But the offense was supposed to be a more explosive, well-oiled machine with Derek Carr and Davante Adams in Josh McDaniels’ passing scheme. Instead, they’ve shown plenty of dysfunction in crucial moments so far to quickly fall behind in the tough AFC West.
27. Indianapolis Colts 0-1-1 (16)
The Colts failed to earn a point in Jacksonville and fell to 0-2 in AFC South play to start the road season. Matt Ryan and the passing offense carry both Jonathan Taylor and the defense without Shaquille Leonard. Indianapolis is supposed to be the best team in the division, but looks more like the worst.
28. New York Jets 1-1 (32)
Flacco has provided a spark in the passing game without Zach Wilson, getting the ball to all of his talented receivers, and the Jets also have promising rookie running back Breece Hall. While the defense didn’t work for Cleveland, the fight and effort from Robert Saleh’s team did.
29 Seattle Seahawks 1-1 (26)
The Seahawks collapsed in San Francisco reminding everyone of their limited talent at quarterback and defense. Wilson’s emotional overreaction against the Broncos has given way to the harsh reality of the season.
30. Houston Texans 0-1-1 (28)
The Texans put pressure on Denver as their defense continues to overplay for Lovie Smith. His offensive limitations with Davis Mills have become clear, especially on the road.
31. Atlanta Falcons 0-2 (30)
The Falcons will do their best to play hard and be competitive with a limited roster, caught between fading and rebuilding. But they just don’t get enough punch with Marcus Mariota and the defense beyond playmakers Cordarrelle Patterson, Kyle Pitts, Drake London and AJ Terrell. They were completely outplayed by the Rams.
32. Carolina Panthers 0-2 (29)
The Panthers have lost two close games to two other average to poor teams: the Browns and Giants. Baker Mayfield’s offense had flashes, but it wasn’t effective or efficient. The defense is doing everything they can to keep them in games, but everything continues to point to a quick end to the Matt Rhule era.
