Canadian Keegan Messing was able to present a full program at the Beijing Olympics after the last few weeks in roller coasters.
Messing skated his free skate on Thursday recording a score of 172.37 which was tentatively the third best score on the day at the time. Added to the 93.24 points of his short program, this collection gave him a total of 265.61 points for the competition.
Messing arrived in Beijing just before his ordeal due to a positive COVID-19 result which delayed his departure from Canada.
In addition to Messing, the Japanese Yuzuru Hanyu was under the reflectors during the free program with the possibility of seeing him perform a quadruple axel. The two-time Olympic champion attempted the daring maneuver, but barely lacked rotation to complete the landing. Hanyu still stood out with a score of 188.06 points for his program, giving him a total of 283.21. He arrived at the eighth rung after the short program.
The competition is still ongoing and American Nathan Chen is in good shape to take the gold after a first program that gave him a record 113.97 points.
